Instinct 2 Solar Endless Reboot Loop - Factory Reset doesn't help

Since today, out of nothing (I was just working in my office, no activities being recorded), my Instinct 2 Solar Tactical was frozen (display not being updated anymore, stuck on watch face) so I did a hard-power-down (keep Ctrl pressed).

On power-on, it booted up ok, started to sync, but then suddenly rebooted.

And this is happening in an endless loop now. It will boot, run ok for a couple of seconds, and then reboot during sync.

So I tried a full factory reset (delete all settings including activity data) and also deleted storage/cache of Garmin Connect app on my Android phone before paring the devices again.

It didn't help.

This reboot cycle does not seem to have an end and I suspect it is triggered by something retrieved from Garmin servers, e.g. activity data, because I had deleted local storage+cache of Garmin Connect without any luck.

Instinct firmware seems to be up-to-date: 14.12 (30c71f0)

And there are no watchfaces or apps from ConnectIQ store installed which could be the culprit.

As a workaround, I have disconnected the watch from the phone => no issues since, so I'm 100% sure that it's related to syncing.

How to proceed from here?

  • There is more: it's not reading heart rate nor pulse-ox anymore.

Sensor LEDs on the back are blinking green / red as usual.

Manual pulse ox reading just keeps telling me "keep still" but nothing else, measurement advancement circle stuck at 0% position, both values (heart rate and ox) are displayed as --

And after a hard-poweroff it's now in a much shorter reboot loop - watchface is only displayed for 1..2 seconds before it reboots again.

Another factory reset with full data wipe and skipping phone pairing didn't help either.

    Looks like hardware fault Unamused

  • Yeah, that's what I did too, yesterday.... but they state that they are lacking human resources so it may take forever to get a reply.

So I also wanted to share my experience with the forum - just in case somebody is having similar issues.

In the mean time I also did that button-reset, i.e. power-off, keep both right buttons pressed and release on after another when it beeps. It did reset the watch, but as soon as the initial setup is done and the default watchface is displayed, it will reboot eventually and enter the loop again.

On the Garmin USB drive I found an error log full of stack traces - lets see if support will request them and make use of it.

Needless to say that I am very much disappointed - bought the Instinct 2 Tactical Solar as an upgrade for my old Instinct 1 which ran flawlessly for more than 2 years and now it failed only after 20 months or so. And I don't do any extreme sports nor wear it in harsh environments. Just office-work, cycling and hiking.

  • I am impressed - they replied today and offered RMA / replacement. Great!

  • My instinct 2x has started to do this today. I think my garmin days may be coming to an end.
