Distance recording stops exactly at 165.9km

Hey people, I may need your help with my Instinct 2X Solar Tactical watch. According to my understanding, the watch suffers from a software malfunction, which I would like to describe in detail below. The point is that I start cycling activity and then the watch just refuses to record distance over 165.9km.

While recording cycling activity, the distance measurement stops at 165.9km and does not resume, even though I often cycle over 200km distances during one single activity, under 12 hours or so. Other data fields are also messed up (e.g. calorie counting), but GPS reception is perfect, the Auto-pause function works and the current speed is correctly displayed. I can sync the activity to the Connect app, where the recorded distance (incorrectly) shows 165.9km, but the track is correctly plotted on the map. No other external sensor is connected to the watch during the activity. The watch has already been replaced under warranty, but the malfunction has not been resolved. Reboot and factory data reset has been done, and the watch software has been updated in both the Express and Connect apps. It is a very annoying bug that accours during extremely long cycling rides, without exception, the distance measurement always stops between 165km and 166km and from then on it does not continue.

I am a loyal user of Garmin, therefore I would like to know whether this bug could be fixed during a software-update.

I cannot help you with the bug (you better ask the Support again to fix it), but as a workaround, you can use the function Save as Course on the activity screen. The course screen then shows the distance of the entire track, and you can copy it, and edit the distance of the activity with it. Easier and quicker done on Garmin Connect Web.

Alternatively, if you have your account linked with Strava, you can also get the true distance by using the function Correct Distance on the activity page on Strava's website (not available in the app, AFAIK).

You could also try using a speed sensor (such as for example the Speed Sensor 2). If paired with Instinct 2, it then measures the distance too. It would be interesting to see, whether the distance is limited, in such configuration, too.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. :) I have already contacted the official Garmin support vie e-mail, now waiting for reply. I really hope that the bug is going to be fix one way or another (it has already accoured to my friends as well, who bought the exact same watch and also cycle some crazy distances), so I assume that it is not a unique issue. Anyway, distance recording failure is pretty much a significant error when talking about Garmin, so....fingers crossed.

Yes, I do. The first one has the GPS track of 186.34 km, and the second one shows 171.08 km when exported as Course. I will look at the background data later today.

Thank you, it is very nice of you! You are right, the real distance is way longer than what the watch/Connect shows us.

I had the same issue once with 2 solar. The watch freezes at 170km. I had 3 sensors connected and a loaded route. While cycling i made a soft reset to the watch and it everything restored. The distance was ok which means it was recording despite shown freezed. It is tricky, but have you tried soft reset during the activity?

Thank you for your reply. By soft reset you mean turn off - turn on, right?

Can you even do it while recording an active activity? So I just check my watch, relalise Im close or above 165kms and I turn off-on right during activity recording and then the watch turns back on and starts recording distance as prescribed without the loss of the activity?

No I have not tried this method before. I assume You did try this one, has it fixed your watch permanently or this bug needs to be reseted by this method every single time I ride over 165km? :D cheers mate

Soft reset = Hold CTRL button for 10secs.
At first i waited for 5-10 minutes in case it restored itself. But then i decided to soft reset it and when it turned back on it had the activity with no loss as you can see in the file.

Thank you for your reply and valuable suggestion! I am going to give it a try this weekend, I hope it is going to work then. Nevertheless, do you people think this type of bug is something that participating in the new Beta-software-whatever program could possibly ressolve for once and for all?
