Strava activity showing device name as Garmin Instinct 2 instead of Garmin Instinct 2 Solar

When my activity from Garmin Instinct 2 Solar gets synced to Strava, it shows up as Garmin Instinct 2 instead of Garmin Instinct 2 Solar. Attached screenshot. I have seen for other users who have the same device it shows up correctly. Any idea what's wrong with mine?

  • Do you have the app on the latest version.  If not, do that and do a small (start a new activity and save it after 5 seconds) to make sure it's working.  If the app is the latest version, uninstall and reinstall again.

  • Ask Strava. The issue is on them to resolve.

  • I raised a ticket on them and they replied that Garmin uses same identifier for multiple watches. Attaching screenshot of their response.

  • Make sure everything is up to date.  The watch firmware, Garmin connect mobile and Strava.  Do that and do a small (start a new activity and save it after 5 seconds) to make sure it's working.  If the app is the latest version, uninstall and reinstall again.I think that's the best thing to do if any are not on the latest.  My my watch shows up correctly.

I don't believe this will make a bit of difference with respect to the OP's issue.  The I2/I2s come in solar and non-solar variants, but I expect that Garmin stamps the same product ID in the activity file for both variants.  The product ID is what Strava keys on to display the device type.  The I2X only comes as a solar variant so your device name with "Solar" tacked on the end makes sense.

If Garmin Connect identifies your device as Instinct 2 Solar on the activity screen, and Strava does not, then it means that the activity FIT file does contain the model info (both sides use the same file). In that case contact Strava again and ask them to fix it, if the exact identification is important to you.

Don't you, by hazard, own an APAC model? Those may have different model IDs than the RoW models, and Strava perhaps does not have them all correctly in their database.

  • Yes, Garmin Connect app is showing Instinct 2 Solar. The model was purchased in US on Amazon. I am using it in Bengaluru, India.

  • Can you share a link to one of your activities, or export it as "original" from Garmin Connect Web, and insert into a message here? We could then perhaps tell you what is the model ID your watch reports. However, if you tell that GC reports it correctly, then nobody else than Strava can fix it.

  • This is a screenshot from Garmin Connect Web showing the device name.

I downloaded the FIT file for one of my running activity and opened on a website. Below is the screenshot of the file id row. Product shows instinct2. Is this what Strava picks up?
