Weird GPS behaviour with Walk activity

I observed a strange thing today with my Instinct 2. I went for a walk with GPS on, after 2kms of my walk I saw distance field kept increasing randomly even when I had stopped walking. After sometime it became normal.

Once the activity was synchronised with Garmin connect, I see the map pointing to a complete different location from where I had walked. This is the first time I'm noticing this kind of issue.

I've attached the screenshot here for reference, we can see a straight line and also the path it has traced is wrong.

Has anyone faced the same kind of iWrong path tracedssue? How to avoid this in the future. Please let me know.

  • I recommend soft-resetting the watch - sync, then hold the Light button for some 30s till it shuts down (do not release the button when the emergency alert appears!). No worry, no data or settings gets lost with this type of reset. Then start the watch and connect it over the USB cable to a computer with Garmin Express, delete the CPE file in the folder //GARMIN/RemoteSW/ on the watch, and then check for updates in Garmin Express. When the watch is fully charged, disconnect, (if prompted for updating the firmware, let the procedure complete), and then soft-reset the watch again.

  • Thank you Trux. I was able to follow your steps . As you mentioned I've deleted the CPE.bin file. I will update here if I face the same issue after my next activity.

Did this issue caused by CPE.bin file ? Was it corrupted by any chance. Please let me know should I keep deleting that file if it reappears.

    Thanks again.

  • Did this issue caused by CPE.bin file

Could be. Another possibility is that it was caused by a loss of GPS signal, hardware malfunction, or by a firmware update (and there was one at the end of December). When firmware update happens, it is always better doing the soft-reset, and replace the CPE file when there are some GPS irregularities. Otherwise there is no reason deleting it. The CPE file is normally being updated automatically.

  • ... also an incomplete firmware update may be the culprit - i.e. having updated the main firmware, but still missing the update of the GPS firmware (and yes, the latest update contained that part too). That can easily happen too, especially when not updating the firmware over the USB cable - that's why I recommended checking for updates with Garmin Express.

  • Just to make sure, I'm sharing the software version of my Instinct. Please check if I'm having the latest GPS version.

    GPS version
