Sharp decrease in number of calories burned for the same heart rates

Hi all,

I usually get around 20000 steps per day, with 15000-18000 steps coming from morning/lunch/evening walks. On one particular route of 6000 steps, which I have been monitoring for months, I typically burn 200-250 calories (according my Instinct 2). Additionally, everyday for the past few months, my Instinct has told me that I burn around 650 calories total for all my walking activity. However, today there has been a sharp decline in the number of active calories reported by the watch for these same activities. My 6000 step walk this morning gave me around 20 active calories (it's usually 200-220). I've now totalled 16000 steps today and it says that I've burned 150 active calories in total. I've never seen it this low for so many steps. It would normally be at least 450-650 by now (according to the watch that is), as I walk briskly.

Interestingly, there is no colour on today's heart rate graph, but the recorded heart rates are comparable to yesterdays (where a lot more calories were recorded as being burned). The shading of the line is now just a constant grey, with no hot spots that are normally there. I assume this means that, for some reason, the watch isn't registering the same heart rate zones as work anymore, or something. I could maybe understand this over a long period of time, as fitness levels increase, but it's dropped off a cliff today and I'm exerting the same effort when I walk. I've not changed any setting in the watch that I know of. What could be causing this?

Here is what a 20 min walk looked like yesterday:

Here is what a longer walk (on the same track) looked like today. Note that the entire heart rate line is constant grey, and the heart rate is comparable to yesterday:

Any help would be appreciated.

  • I updated my weight from 77.2kg to 75.9kg in the Garmin Connect app this morning, but I'm not sure that this should cause such a dramatic change.

  • Weight, height, age, ender, 7 days avg Resting HR, and the Max HR have influence on the rate of Calories burned. So the biggest suspects besides the weight is the Resting HR, and the Max HR. Verify values from yesterday and from today (easiest done in the Reports » Health section of  Garmin Connect Web).

  • Note that the entire heart rate line is constant grey, and the heart rate is comparable to yesterday

Yes, having the graph red at just 97 bpm is indeed suspicious. It looks like either the Max HR was way too low on that day (somewhere near 100 bpm), and/or the HR Zones were incorrect. Red color on the HR graph means you've been in the zone 5. Compare the HR Zones of both activities, or share links to them here.

  • Thanks ,

I discovered the cause of the issue during the last week. I noticed when running that even at the point of significant exertion and fatigue (and using a bluetooth chest strap heart rate monitor), my heart rate zone said "Warm up" (zone 1) on the watch. I then came across this thread. I then noticed that my heart rate zones, based on % of LTHR, were now too high for some reason. They seem to have jumped after an auto LTHR adjustment following a run last weekend.

Using the "reset zones" function on the Instinct moved the HR zones to much more reasonable levels. My zones now look correct while running and the calculated calorie burns during my walks have gone back to normal. Looks like there is some kind of bug in the software that doesn't adjust heart rate zones appropriately when auto-calculating LTHR.

    Thanks again for the help.

  • As a workaround, I guess I'll have to reset my HR zones after every auto LTHR adjustment in the future.

My HR Zones are also based on the LTHR, and I did not observe any problems when I get a new LTHR value. I am not telling there is not a bug, and it is certainly wise to keep an eye on the HRZ settings, but perhaps it happens only under certain conditions. If you find the HRZ were changed incorrectly again, do not hesitate to report it to the Support.

  • Interesting. A couple of people in the thread I linked above mentioned that they have seen their HR zones jumbled following an LTHR update. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
