Instinct 2X Altimeter issue

Hi there,

I got an issue with my instinct 2x Altimeter,

When the watch was new it run absolutely perfect, it calibrates over night an then stays at the same lvl, it detects small changes very well. For example wenn I am going up one floor it adds 3 meters and than stays there. If I go down the same. Outside when I was hiking or biking the same.

Now for some Reason, the Altimeter goes crazy. Over night it looks like I sleep in an elevator and when I calibrate it manually it takes one or two seconds an the watch goes down or up for a few meters. Also when I am just sitting around.

I don't now if the error comes from the hardware itself or with an software update, did anyone else got these problems?

After a few more days of observation i think that the Altimeter works correctly. Stays at the same lvl an then gets a drop or increases the altitude. Testet over night in and outside, left the watch outside to see whats happens. its like 9820003 said, something has Change with the last update. Altimeter is way more effected by changes in air pressure while there is no movement. i did not know if this just happens to a few or every instinct 2x user. but i like it better as it was

After a few days more I think the sensor is fine, but it looks like the auto mode for the Altimeter did not work. I hope Garmin is going to fix this issue with the next update.

  • it looks like the auto mode for the Altimeter did not work

I would tell the opposite. The watch detected sharp changes of air pressure, which could not be attributed to be caused by the weather, hence it switched to the altimeter mode. That's exactly how it is designed to work. The problem in not the auto mode, the problem are the sudden atmospheric changes. As long as you do not find why they were, the watch will behave exactly in the same way if it happes again.

Maybe, but it all started with the latest update.

The pressure changes in your home? Did not the heating season start at about the same date? Or did you start closing the windows during the day or night, at about the same time?

As I said, I have this issue every where, inside outside, day, night. I sleep with no heating and slightly open window. And I could swear it startet with the latest update, it was absolute solid when I bought the watch.

  • I have absolutely no such problems after the last update. And it is probably the case for others too, otherwise we would see many more complaints here.

Some dirt, deposits, sweat, or moisture could cause pressure changes like in your screenshot. Such rapid changes are unlikely to be coming from the weather, so it is logical that the watch interprets them as motion induced, and switches to the altimeter mode. Unless you find out what causes the pressure changes, it will happen again.

Get an alternative accurate barometer and log the pressure changes with it, and then compare. If the other barometer does not show any such changes, then there is a problem with the sensor - you will either need to clean the sensor port orifice, or you can try requesting a replacement device from Garmin.

  • I can confirm the same, issue persists, inside or outside, day or night. it's like sensor got hypersensitive and it's become useless actually. one thing I would link it to is recent firmware as I don't recall it to be so much unreliable before. It might sensor itself too, so I will probably go to support soon to see what they have to say

  • I am on the 14.05 beta version. Sensor mode "automatic". I'm in the house all day today and it was very stormy outside.
The altimeter works fine for me.
