Instinct 2X sensors blink when it's not on my wrist

Hi,

i noticed that everytime I leave my Instinct 2X on the table, every exactly 15sec the sensors dimly blink.

Is it normal? That never happened with my old Instinct and Instinct 2 Solar.

Any owner of Instinct 2X noticed that? I recorded a video and then I extracted a picture of the sensor blinking..

  • I tried with a video, but it comes out completely black.

  • All 15 seconds. Green AND Red !

    This behavior is new.

It takes place even when optical HR measurement is disabled.

Yes, I know. That's what this thread is about. I can see it with my bare eyes (when the sensor is enabled), not my phone camera though. Does not happen on my watch, when I turn the Wrist HR sensor off, though.

As I wrote, I have the standard Instinct 2 (no 2X, and no solar version), hence with the older HR sensor, and without Garmin Pay. So either it is a wrist detection needed for Garmin Pay (or for another feature), or it is because of the new sensor that I believe is used on the 2X models.

I still think think, regardless of its true purpose, that its influence on the battery life is completely negligible, and it is of absolutely no concern from this point of view.

  • or it is because of the new sensor that I believe is used on the 2X models.

It is the same sensor as the tactix 7 Pro. And both watches have the same behavior. However, with both watches only since the firmware update.

It may be that this does not have a significant impact on power consumption. However, I wonder why this behavior has only occurred since a FW update, and what sense it makes then. If this behavior is not needed for the proper functioning of the watch, Garmin should still undo it. Because it will have an impact on the LEDs' lifespan in the long run. Every current surge on a component affects the lifespan.
Aside. My first 2x Solar was replaced after the HR sensor suffered a complete failure and stopped working after two weeks.

  • It is normal behavior with our newer generation watches and will not be a battery concern.

  • And is also the very dimmed regular flashing of the RED AND green LED despite switched off HR sensor normal ?

(That is the topic of this thread).

If so, what is the purpose of the almost invisible flash every 15 seconds ?

  • And is also the very dimmed regular flashing of the RED AND green LED despite switched off HR sensor normal ?

Yes. Engineering has confirmed it is now normal behavior across all of our current generation watches.

It is not the type of detail engineering will provide. It clearly serves a purpose though since it is now taking place on all current generation outdoor watches. Based on my own testing, I have not seen any difference in battery across all of my own watches. (IE: an Instinct 2 Solar, Instinct 2X Solar, Epix 2 47mm, Epix Pro 51mm, and a Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar.)
