Hi I have a query re my new instinct 2 solar - steps not counting properly playing golf

when I use the inbuilt golf activity on a golf course , the steps counted are well below what I expect and I used to get on my fitbit.

Today I played again and my playing partner had 12800 steps - my instinct 2 solar had 7900. Previously me and my golfing partner were within 500 on a round of golf (typically approx 5 miles). Can anyone explain this , and/or find a solution?

On general use the Instinct is below previous measures but I suspect fitbit was slightly overestimating.

I have previously checked calibration and instinct 2 was fine - gave 208 for the 200 test walk I did (fitbit said 242 on same walk)

So far as i am aware I'm on latest software - it has updated a few times in the 2/3 weeks I've had it.

Thanks Chris

  • Is your arm wearing the watch freely moving when you walk, or do you push a golf trolley with it?

My Garmin Watch is Not Accurately Counting Steps | Garmin Customer Support

  • Hi - thanks for your suggestion.

I have an electric trolley and as I am right handed I tend to guide it with my right hand.

Instinct is on left wrist, so I dont think this is the reason for the differences I have encountered.

  • Try keeping the watch in a pocket to see whether it makes any difference. If it is more accurate when worn in the pocket, then you may be unconsciously using the left hand for holding on the trolley. Also compare the distance walked with the number of steps, and see whether it matches with your average stride length. It can also be that your partner's watch detects far too many steps, or adds also the swings and other accidental arm movements to the steps count.

  • Thanks again for this suggestion.

However the reason I bought the instinct was so that on course in a round I can look at my watch and get the yardage for the next shot.

So having it in your pocket defeats the purpose.

I will however try it once to see if there's a difference in steps.

FYI my activity report on round this morning said 4.61 miles. This is a bit lower than expected but does not equate to a difference of approx 5000 steps with my playing partner. In my experience 5000 steps is over 2 miles, probably closer to 2 1/2.

I am just about to go away for a week, so next round will be approx 2 weeks time.

I will update this article on my return.

    Regards

    Chris

Yes, I understand, it is the same for everyone. The proposal to wear it the pocket was meant just as a test, to help you localizing where the problem comes from. Without doing such tests, it may be more difficult to localize the problem.

BTW, 7900 steps for 4.61 miles sounds credible. It gives the average stride of 1.02 yard (or 93 cm). Depending how tall you are, that can be perfectly possible.
