Yoga profile Stress Graph

I was thinking about installing the latest beta, but the issues scared me off.

I need ONE thing only. Could someone check if the yoga bug has been fixed yet?

Basically, if you run a yoga activity, the main stress graph (not the one inside that activity) gets marked as active. And it's not supposed to be with Yoga. This is correct on all other watches I know of released after October 2019, just not Instinct 2 series. This is very important to me and a lot of others, and I've been waiting for it to be fixed since I got the watch (November 30).

  • I think you've almost got it.

The other watches had yoga from inception. Yoga had been added to the Instinct architecture at model 2, so probably has been developed independently from a software point of view.

Knowing a little about product design in hardware and software through my partner, its not the case that features can just be plugged in. I expect the firmware in Vivoactive and all the Venus is the same architecture with features that just plug and play in the development. I'd bet money that Instinct has a different architecture and when yoga has been added to the newest version its been coded separately for Instinct firmware

I hope I'm wrong because if I'm right then there's no way they are going to code that 'feature' that no one apart from us values. Chris from Garmin said as much

Or, if that's all bunkum then Garmin, treat yoga in Instinct2 just like yoga in the Vivoactive/Venu ecosystem ie allow stress to be recorded, please!

  • Yoga is on the original Instinct. A scaled down version compared to the Vivoactive 4 and Venu series. And I don't know when it was added.

And that might be the issue. That they are unwilling to change Yoga from the original Instinct.

But it needs to be done to conform with how Garmin does things!

BTW, not asking for workouts with graphics and that jazz on Instinct 2. Just stress on the main stress graph and the body battery/stress graph!

  • One thing that's really important about all this that is being overlooked somewhat is the fact that it's not enough to say you can click on the activity to see the stress graph and so you have the data. It's really important that the data from within the activity is incorporated into the daily stress scores so that it's not skewed.

I Want to include screenshots but don't know how unless anyone can tell me? I have nearly 2 years of my data and every morning religiously I enter that data into a graphing app. I can then see my daily stress scores over time and compare it against any other factor I have logged and find out what's working for my body. Like too much activity or my graphs show a clear correlation between better sleep and lower stress, which tells me how important it is to improve my sleep. We understand it might be less accurate when we're moving, but our activity when running yoga is considerably less than someone doing an average yoga session. We accept it might not be perfect but we come to learn what data is useful or not and the stress feature for me has always shown an accurate reflection of how my body feels, and over the long term the trends are very meaningful. It would be a deal breaker for these scores to be skewed from running yoga because sometimes I run it for 40 minutes, and sometimes for 12 hours. Luckily for me with a vivoactive 4s, the scores aren't affected by how long I ran yoga for.

Those who are saying its not appropriate to use these watches should look at the NICE guidelines for ME/CFS, which state that any attempts to pace using any devices the person has to hand, including heart rate monitors, should be encouraged. In other words it is explicit that normal devices are useful and to be encouraged. We're not here to sue anyone, we are managing our activity levels. It is a fitness device and activity tracker as much for us as anyone else. The difference is in our illness, the body uses as much energy to walk to the bathroom as a well person might use power walking up a steep hill. It is a known thing for people to train in zone 2, there are even garmin groups of people training whilst trying to stay under certain heart thresholds. We are doing the exact same thing. The only difference is our zone and threshold is shifted much lower, we are training as if we are the most unfit person. In this way, it's not being used as a medical device, just to keep our training within the lower zones. This helps us prevent injuries or risks from over training, in exactly the same way as a sportsman paces with a watch. Are we to be penalised for having much lower fitness thresholds? The general statement that it's not a medical device is a cop out. I would want to see that legally defined and someone to prove to me how this is different from an athlete aiming for peak performance and using the watch to avoid injury and overtraining. It's just feedback. It's not treating anything.

  • For me the issue is that not being able to use Yoga on the Instinct 2 skews the rest. I still have a Venu 2s. I would like to let go of that. I would like for Yoga to contribute to training load and the other performance metrics on Instinct 2. Venu doesn't cut it for me. I bought the Instinct 2s for the HRV Status, and 10 ATM. Otherwise I would have gone for Forerunner 255s. And right now I regret looking at that 10 ATM unless this is fixed. And I need Garmin to make me whole. Either exchange my Instinct 2s for a Forerunner 255s or fix Yoga.

  • I whole-heartedly agree.

Thanks for making clear how Garmin devices are being used by different populations of people in a really meaningful and beneficial way.

Just because someone has a medical condition and finds using a watch in a specific way for pacing beneficial does not mean we need to be dropped like hot potatoes. It's very obvious to anyone (and Garmin makes very clear) that these are not medical devices, they are being used for the same purpose as an athlete, which is even if the scope is much smaller.

For me, my aim is to stay in zone 1 90% of the time and zone 3 rarely. This has stabised my symptoms and brought me greater quality of life.

There is also now, sadly, and ever growing cohort of previously fit people with Garmins who have sadly developed long-covid and are now learning to use their watch in this new way. Many of those have returned to much better health.

And back to the OP, they just want the Instcint2 to behave like the other watches with regard to how the yoga activity calculates stress whilst its running. That's all.

  • why can't garmin include on the main graph, the stress/body battery data that is generated during Yoga activity?

I am always happy to learn more information to provide everyone and to send your user experience to engineering for review.

It will take time and patience will be needed please but I will update this thread as soon as I learn any additional information for when you are recording with your Yoga profile and what to expect for your All Day Stress graph seen on your Garmin Connect account.

Thank you to everyone for your input, your experience based Yoga examples, and for all of the information you have added into the thread to better understand what we need to look into further.

  • Thank you, . I have been very patient, and am willing to be patient within reason. I hope it might be included in the next main release?

Also include one more thing: This watch is excellent as an alternative to Forerunner 255s in my market segment when this has been fixed. It's cheaper in many markets and better water rating. And it appeals to a slightly different demographic even apart from the price, which is just above Vivoactive 4s, which was the first watch to gain traction in this market. It could end up with a substantially higher market share as a result of this being fixed.

  • I hope it might be included in the next main release?

I will be responding to your PM message as soon as possible. I will then write a new detailed case to describe your experience, along with the others in this thread, going over the All Day Stress graph missing the time period of your Yoga activity. Engineering will then determine if there is a software bug or if the functionality is "By Design."

The original case I quoted from suggested your stress functionality graph is By Design but I am not 100% certain given all of the additional details added into this thread. I believe bringing the Fitness segment watches functionality into the engineering conversation may help be a catalyst. We will see what is learned through the new case. I will update this thread once the case is updated.

  • Excellent news.

With regard to how this feature is being used as a monitoring system on the Venu by myself, and which the OP is asking theirs to align with, I am very willing to go into more detail of what and how its useful.

Don't hesitate to contact me if that would be helpful Blush
