Instinct2 & Garmin coach compatibility

Is it possible to use the half marathon training plan on an Instinct2? I have used it last year with my Vivoactive3 but can't access the workouts on my Instinct2.

The plan is in my garmin calender on my phone but when i access the training calender on watch it asks me to download the calender from garmin connect. The connect app tells me it will download at next sync but it never does.

I have deleted the plan, reloaded it, changed it, rebooted watch and nothing works leading me to believe that it is not available on Instinct2.

Has anyone used a training plan on this watch?

Thank you

Billy

  • No plan but by entering a race date and information you get daily suggested workouts which populate the calendar (for several days ahead)

As I wrote, the Race feature is not supported by Instinct…

  • Interesting.

Is that Garmin Coach with a particular Coach and plan or have you programmed in a race date and are then using the (AI?) generated anonymous Garmin Coach activities.

I haven't tried the former and I can't get the latter to work (my calendar is populated but they don't sync over BUT if I add my own workouts to the calendar they do)

This seems like a software oversight to me.

The workaround is to recreate each AI generated workout within the calendar but that is a bit tedious.

Not sure what exactly you mean by the "(AI?) generated anonymous Garmin Coach activities", but there are two types of training plans in GC - the Self-Guided plans, and the adaptive Garmin Coach plans. Both of them work fine with Instinct 2, and sync to the device without problems, on my end too. Perhaps try quitting the plan, and set it up again, carefully taking care that you enter valid data, and select a race date sufficiently far away in future. Do not forget to sync the watch, once you've set up the plan.

If you have set it up in GC Web, verify that it is visible on the phone app too. If it is not, then you probably use two different accounts on each end.

  • I removed and restarted the race event twice and synced the watch via BT several times as anyone would. It still doesn't sync the workouts. (I just get the generic training suggestions)

In the connect app there is an option to send to device but my Instinct 2X is listed as not compatible.

Also, there seems to be no garmin coach app available for this watch - not a big problem if the workouts would appear in my calendar.

    Puzzling.

Do I need beta firmware for this feature?

    P.S.

by AI I mean that which Garmin tems adaptive - I hope they adapt intelligently!  These seem to be associated with a coach (e.g. Greg McMillan) or are anonymous (for a particular race) are they not?

  • Do I need beta firmware for this feature?

There is currently no beta firmware. It was already released publicly a month ago. However, both types of plans always worked, regardless of the version, and I did some of them even with my Instinct 1st generation years ago.

I just tried setting up the 10k Greg McMillan adaptive plan, and it synced without problems to my watch.

In the connect app there is an option to send to device but my Instinct 2X is listed as not compatible.

Which version of the app do you use?

  • Using version 5.5.

    So far I have tried:

removing my previous devices fr930 and fr255

deleting the race and adding it back in (twice)

    emptying the android app cache

    restarting the watch

My calendar on PC and mobile is populated with suggested workouts with respect to my programmed race

My watch calendar just says synch the watch

I have reviewed the sync log file in settings and it reports a successful sync

I have not synced with the PC app Garmin Express (I don't think this is needed but...)

    It is a bit weird.

Have you successfully synced where you have NOT registered for a named coach plan, merely a race? (which is what I have done)

Not sure what you mean. Are you referring to a Self-Guided plan? When selecting an adaptive Coach Plan, I see no option continuing without choosing a coach (doing it on GC Web). And at a Self-Guided plan, I do not see an option for entering the race. Which plan exactly are you trying to set up?

  • I think I understand now the problem you face. On my mind you do not use any Coach Plan, and rather just the race plan, which is in fact just a Daily Suggested Workout adapted to the race. This feature is indeed not available for Instinct 2. Use the true Garmin Coach plan, or a Self-Guided plan instead. Or just the Daily Suggested Workout.

Or use your Forerunner for that. The device has to support the "Race Widget", and Instinct 2 does not have it:

  • Yes.

No plan but by entering a race date and information you get daily suggested workouts which populate the calendar (for several days ahead) These seem to make sense from the point of view of the type and timing of the race.

Unfortunately these don't pull across to the Instinct 2 X which instead continues with non race focussed daily suggested workouts (irritating, can you switch these off?)

There is no adaptive Garmin Coach plan for the Marathon and I personally don't find the Full Potential plans good for my own training.

    What a strange oversight.

I am only 9 weeks away from the event so will probably just continue with the AI marathon plan on my Huawei GT4 (although it does seem a bit whacky)

I like the clear monochrome display and battery life of the Instinct 2 X. I also like that Garmin watches can follow a custom workout while navigating (this simple combination seems missing from all other devices that I know). Shame about little oddities such as this.

As I wrote, the Race feature is not supported by Instinct 2. Only classical (non-race) Coach and Self-Gudided Plans.

irritating, can you switch these off?

Yes, you can. In the Run » Menu » Training » Workouts » DSW » Today » OK » Settings » Prompt Off (if remember well)

    What a strange oversight.

Not an oversight. Race is not implemented intentionally on Instinct 2.
