Workout without counter

Hello everyone,

for short readers:

Is there any way to program a HIIT workout, that does not count reps, round times or anything else on Instinct 2? Just the duration of the activity by starting and stopping it?

Same question goes für other things like running or weightlifting,

The long story:

I recently started working out with my Instict 2, ans I absolutely dislike it!

Basically I use HIIT, running and weightlifting. Any of the given activities is always linked to some kind of counter, timer, or round based time capturing. And I don't want that.

I am totally new to Garmin trackers and I want to focus on my Workout, during my workout. As I am used to by other fitness trackers, I like to select my kind of workout, lets say HIIT, start the activity, and then totally ignore the watch until I finish the activity. My HIIT workouts are often extremely fast and exhausting, and I have no interest in klicking on my watch a hundet times after doing hundret Burpees.

If I just ignore it, and do a half an hour training session, with dozens of rounds and hundrets of reps in total, its likely to show something like one round and estimated 20 reps, or so. Resulting in burning 120 calories with an average heart rate of 160. Statistics read like I was a 70 year old, 180 kilogramm dude, who tried to pick up a cookie from the flor for 30 minutes. If I was trying to properly track an activity like that, it would riun my time and take twice as long, just by clicking on my watch.

Long story short. Any Help here?

Thank you!

  • I like to select my kind of workout, lets say HIIT, start the activity, and then totally ignore the watch until I finish the activity.

Not sure if I understand you correctly, but that's exactly the way I use my Instinct 2. I do not use any Garmin Workouts. I simply start the HIIT Activity, do my exercises, then stop and save the activity. No need to do anything with the watch during the workout.

  • Can you finish without any further input?

Because, basically, I could do that, but before finishing, it will finish "round 1" first, then ask me to correct my repcount. I can go ahead and just finish the activity from there, but it will be saved as one big round with an automatically counted number of reps, that is absolutely not correct. This results in the app thinking that I spent a lot of time and effort for one round of HIIT doing a very small amount of reps, wich then results in very poor statistics and number of burned calories calculated.

I already tried different HIIT setups, counters and custom HIIT sessions, but I cant find any option to get rid of the round timer and rep counter.

Same goes for weightlifting, running, and what not...

  • Can you finish without any further input?

Yes, of course. This is how I use HIIT:

    1. Press GPS button to open the activity list
    2. Scroll to HIIT and press GPS again
    3. Press GPS on the option Free
    4. Press GPS again to start the loaded HIIT activity
    5. Do the workout for as long as you want, without touching the watch (unless you want to scroll the screens, look the time, etc)
    6. Press GPS to stop the activity
    7. Select Save and press GPS to save the activity

    That's all

  • Just tried it again. I can however, start, and finish the workout without any further input than to start and stop it, nevertheless it still shows "round 1" at the beginning. And when finished, it saves the Workout as one round and also displays it that way in the app, showing "51:36 - ROUNDS: 1 - REPS: 10"

    That freaks me out...

  • And when finished, it saves the Workout as one round

And why exactly is it a problem?

  • First of all, the repcount very likely contributes to the overall health statstics, secondly it is just not true. And the lack of opportunity to turn this off is just poor service...

  • repcount very likely contributes to the overall health statstics,

No it does not. Only the heart rate matters.

secondly it is just not true

It is. You recorded just one round, and nobody cares whether you did one hour of  squats, or 250 different exercises in 20 rounds. If you want to record multiple rounds, use the lap button, but you told you want just a simple activity counting the time of your workout, and that's exactly what you got.

  • BTW, if you want just a simple activity app for recording the duration of your workout, with no gimmicks and no advanced options, you can use the Cardio activity. It is just fine for any indoor activity. The name does not matter at all, it has no impact on the measured metrics anyway, but you can change the type of the activity subsequently to Strength, in Garmin Connect.
