Garmin Tempe readings are verry off on Instinct 2

I've bought myself a Garmin Tempe to put on my backpack during hikes since the internal temperature sensor is affected by boddy temperature and therefore not verry accurate.

I've linked it to my Instinct 2 Solar tac. But the readings are too way off.

At the moment of writing:

- The internal sensor reads 23 degrees.

- The Tempe 26.7 degrees

- The actual temperature in the room is 13.8 degrees.

So the 26.7 degrees of the tempe is way too high.

I was thinking it was just an defective Tempe. So ordered me another one. So I have 2 Tempe's laying around here at the moment.

The both give similar vallues. So I actually think it could be something with Instinct 2 then?

More people having temerature readings that are verry of on Instinct 2 in combination with the Tempe?

    Both of your Tempe's gave about the same temperature when you tested them both. The further testing you have done demonstrates the Tempe sensors are the issue and not your watch temperature sensor.

    Thanks for the response.

    I've laid my Instinct next to the Tempe for 30 min. now.

    - The living room thermostate is showing 13.8 degrees

    - The domotica temp sensor also 13.8 degrees.

    - The internal Instinct sensor 13.7 degrees

    - The both Tempes 26 & 26.4 degrees.

    I use my Tempe nearly daily and have not had issues thus far.  After the initial drop in temp readings from being inside to going outside, the readings are confirmed to be quite accurate.

    Put your Tempes in the fridge and see what happens.  I suggest to make sure they're hanging so the contact is with the air, rather than conduction.  A local guy 3D prints Tempe mounts so one may hang them securely from anything.  This also serves the purpose of helping keep them isolated so they're getting a reading from the air as much as possible, rather than being near one's body or anything else.

    I have the pace for hiking and running . It shows very accurately. It is therefore quickly affected by, for example, brief sunlight, but otherwise it is not a problem.

    The local Garmin support asked me to remove the battery for 60min and see what happends then. Strange because the Tempe gets delivered without a battery and the problem was there from the point of "activating".

    But I did as they asked.

    After putting the battery back after 60 min. I still got the same readings.

    Did another test after:

    - living room temperature: 13.4 degrees

    - Tempe temperature: 25.8 degrees

    After putting it in the fridge for over 30 min.:

    - fridge temperature: 7 degrees

    - Tempe temperature: 14.4 degrees

    It's almost double the temperature the Tempe shows in both cases.

    The odds of two bad Tempe sensors may be incredibly rare but you have done plenty of testing and due diligence to demonstrate the issue is not your Instinct 2 series watches but your Tempe sensors.

    Well it would have been strange to have recieved 2 defective Tempe's yes. Or just extremely bad luck.

    But they both gave exactly the same vallues.

    But on the other hand, the Tempe itself is the sensor. The Instinct is just making the connection here and displaying the vallues the Tempe is sending. Only thing that could be wrong with the watch is that the recieved data maybe gets interpretated or converted wrongly, resulting in these kind of vallues. But then it would have been an firmware issue and more people should face the same problem with Instincts 2 and Tempe's.

    Amazon has send me out a new unit. Probably arriving tomorrow. So I could test the 3th Tempe then.

    It would still be possible to try the Tempe with other watches. If you have the option.

    I've recieve my replacement Tempe today.

    The previous Tempe's both gave almost exact the same temperatures.

    The newly reieved Tempe even shows a greater difference.

    Did a new test todat with one of the previous tests (returned one of them yesterday).

    - Living room temperature: 14.3 degrees

    - Old Tempe: 26.9 degrees

    - newly recieved Tempe: 30.8 degrees

    So I've had 3 Tempes now which are all extremely off. The latest even has the biggest difference.

    3 defective Tempe's in a row should be verry verry strange I think.

    At this point, I would test them on any other Garmin Outdoor or Fitness watch that supports sensors. I have no suggestion given the bigger picture and pattern of 3 in a row. It seems highly improbable until you can test the Tempe Sensors on any other watch to see if they still broadcast the same nonsense temperature. I am sorry it has been a bad experience with the Tempe. I have seen a bad Tempe sensor here and there over the years but 3 in a row? This is a first.
