Changing route during activity

I was trekking today and following a route created in komoot and transfered to the connect-app (I'm not using the komoot app on the watch).

During the Treck I decided to change the route, so I saved a new version in komoot, and it was successfully transferred to the connect app. On the watch I set the activity to "resume later" and tried to load the new route for navigation. I could select any routes that have been on the watch before, but not the new one. Looks like in the"resume later " mode the watch did not sync completely with the phone.

In the evening after coming back and dividing the activity it all synced and I could see the new route on the watch.

Is there any way to change the route for navigation to a new route during an activity?

  • Stop and save the activity. Start a new one. Join the two later using fitfiletools on line.

  • You can do this without stopping the activity. You have to download Garmin Explore app. You will have to import (GPX) or recreate route there. When you select a route in Garmin Explore you can hit 'Navigate' button and app will immediately send the route to your watch and start watch navigation. It's really handy on the trail :) I use it regularly during long runs or hikes to replan a route mid-activity and it works really good. Also bear in mind - Garmin Explore uses a more trail-oriented maps, instead of google maps/apple maps, so in the city they might be a bit cumbersome to use (less detail).

EDIT2: also worth mentioning is that Garmin Explore maps work offline (I'm not sure if Komoot can), so it's handy when you're lost in the wilderness ;)

  • I tried Explore a couple of months ago and found it being pretty buggy, maybe I have to try again.

Komoot can store maps of an area offline, but to plan or change a route it needs internet, that is a disadvantage. The other option on the phone I love and use much is Locus Maps. It can be combined with Brouter for offline route planning, but the routing is not as nice as of komoot and together with Garmin the workflow even harder. Create route, export GPX, import GPX into connect, transfer to the watch.

Anyway, thank you for your suggestion, I will try it. I'm also planning to open a topic to see what other people use as workflow for route planning.

  • I used to use Locus back on Android - awesome application (ability to use scanned raster "paper" maps is great). Yeah, the flow is imperfect - I'm a heavy navigation user in Instinct and there are shortcomings unfortunately (50 point gps course limitation, no 'upcoming points' screen and stability issues). I'm planning to wait for about a year - there is heavy progress in Instinct2 firmware, so I'm hoping Garmin is working on navigation revamp. If not - welp, I'll go and buy Fenix 7S which is a beast (feature wise - unfortunately battery life and solar recharge is not as robust as in Instinct). F7 gives full maps, with points of interest, rerouting, upcoming points etc.
