Battery & Screen in Cold Weather

I'll be taking my i2 on a winter camping trip here in a few months. I was wondering if anyone had any trouble with cold weather with this watch. Please don't be the guy that posts "all batteries suffer cold weather" because some devices have insulated batteries and have more stringent cold weather testing of their devices. If you're not sure what I mean check out gopro batteries regular vs enduro. I am simply wondering if garmin does or has the same and has any language anywhere that states it works great in the cold.

Battery?

Does the screen work properly and not freeze up?

Thank you

  • In the winter, I wear the watch over my jacket when I run.  I still run outside when temps are single digit °F sometimes colder without issue.

  • I did notice during winter runs,  trail runs and hikes that cold causes battery to drop, but even during longer (2-4 hours) activities it wasn't an issue.

  • Has anyone spent an extensive amount of time in the colder weather with the thing? Such as in a tent. I know when my car is outside in the cold weather the media screen freezes up and becomes really unusable. I've never really heard of MIP so wasn't sure how this reacted in the elements

  • The video showing the display after keeping it 36 hours in a freezer. BTW, when wearing it on the wrist under the sleeve, the watch will rarely get colder than some 10-20°C.

  • Thanks so much!!!nGarmin needs to offer you a job by now bro!

  • Interesting.....I was just outside cross country skiing in -15C weather with my Edge 130 device on a wrist strap on my wrist, exposed to the elements. It continually powered off due to the cold temp, still lots of battery storage left.  At home, I looked up the specs for the Edge 130 and saw the operating temperature range was From -20º to 60ºC (from -4º to 140ºF).  I looked at a few other Garmin devices, including the Instinct and noted it also had this very same operating temperature range specification. So .... I'm not convinced these devices meet their stated cold temp specifications.  And Josh's ice block test .... well water freezes at 0C, so presumably ice is close to that temperature ... much warmer than -20C.

Question to all: does anyone have a GARMIN activity tracking device that does operate normally in -10C to -20C  temps?

Yes, the freezing temperature of water is 0°C, but it in no way means that the temperature of ice cannot and will not drop below that. If we followed your logics in the same way for example for iron, then any piece of solid iron would have to have the temperature of ~1500°C

  • I use my I2 Solar and my I1 before that in the Arctic.  It's strapped to my wrist, but it's not covered.  I've had no issues down to -30c outdoor temps for extended periods.  My body will keep it warm enough.  No issues with battery, screen, or anything else.

  • Garmin instinct solar , Sir, yes water freezes at zero but a freezer goes down to -25 just put it in the freezer for an hour  without  the water, then take it out, I did, I went immediately to the thermometer setting and it was -22 .  It will show a graph aswell of the temperature changes, I then sat it on a shelf near the radiator and it worked normally,  no condensation on the screen or in the watch. It is one tough cookie, in my camping kit I have a power bank to charge my phone, if I ever need to charge the watch I use that, I tested it and it charges full, 51 days in 1hr.  But in reality in the Summer , south of France it fully charged every day on its own from the sun hiking. I never take it off, it beats my casios hands down, very impressed.
