Probably because you have enabled Strava segments. Enable Garmin segments in the GC Mobile app menu » Training » Segments » menu (triple dot symbol up right) » Garmin Segments

The Instinct series has never supported Live Segments (Garmin nor Strava).  With the huge feature additions from the Instinct to Instinct2 it does seem odd.  My guess is that the limited storage of the Instinct 2 line may be a contributing factor, just a guess.

I'd tell the OP refers to the plain Segments in Garmin Connect, not Live Segments on the Instinct 2:

.. and those are typically not available in Garmin Connect when you connect GC with Strava, since it enables the Strava segments option, instead of Garmin segments, and you have to flip it back, if you want to see Garmin segments.

I have my GC setup to use Strava Segments.  But I can still access the Garmin Segments from GC and sync them to capable devices.

Yes, that's well possible, but if you do not have the Garmin Segments visible either in Training, or as a tab on the detailed page of an activity, then you need to enable them first in GC Mobile, and then they will be activated.

PS: if Segments are not visible in Garmin Connect, it is also possible to activate them over GC Web, but it is a bit trickier to find the option - there are no settings on the page Training » Segments, but you can add the Segments card to the Dashboard (if it is not already there), and then the option is in the settings of that card:

Agreed.  I was just trying to point out the Strava and Garmin Segments can coexist on the same device and still activate the Live Segment function of the watch.  From a run earler today with my f7:

As you said, you have to select either or to get the full functionality of segment synchronization.

Oh crap!  Thanks for pointing this out.  I was going to kill my Strava sub and just use Garmin segments as I really only compete against myself.  My 745 worked with segments and it never even dawned on me this could be watch specific.  I really love the battery life of my I2 Solar but this may be the proverbial straw.

Why on earth would this not work?  Same .fit file structure to same server.  Very arbitrary on the surface.

$50 more for a 955.  All of the features of the I2 and more (except solar) including Live Segments.
