512KB Storage restriction

Hi,

the Instinct 2 Series Garmin Connect IQ Storage is limited to 512 KB.

Is there any chance of getting this patched to at least 1MB?

This is not mentioned in any spec sheet. 1 App already has 190KB and for me this is a reason to return the watch, I find there shouldn't be a need to argue about that level of storage space.

As per forums.garmin.com/.../1381595 already mentioned, but there it went off topic and deflected.

  • That 512kb is good joke. It's like garmin is still living in year 2000. Feels like artificial limiting.

  • Not necessarily. It's likely been purposely chosen for that exact fact. My Fenix 6x has gigabytes of data, which allows me to run butt loads of apps and data fields, which can also impact the ram and battery.

Inversely, my I2 is built specifically to last for outdoor trekking, hiking, etc., so it needs to stay light in order to afford you a healthy battery, yet still give you the options that may help your outdoor adventures.

I use my f6x for all my running activities and my I2 for hiking, they both work great for what I need them for.

  • Sometimes I think this is the design of the watch. The microprocessor has its own internal memory and there is an extra memory chip on the PCB for the extra data such as activities and languages. The operating system and the IQ apps are stored on the microprocessor and the extra information is stored in the extra rom-chip. But this is just a quick brainfart i have at the moment.

  • If I use the watch and run everyday all day, it syncs to GC right? But I noticed there is a "history" on the watch and shows a lot of past stuff. Does that ever get removed off the watch or how does the watch manage it's space?

  • Hey, your watch keeps a fit file on the watch, which is how it syncs with Garmin Connect to give the activity data. It stays on your watch, but unless you have a lot of GPS data, it's usually only a few kilobytes. Eventually, once full, it just kicks out the oldest data first, i.e. rewrites over it. If you look in your watch while it's USB connected, you can look at the folders history and see it all there as well.
