Battery drain issue -instinct 2 solar

Hey guys,

Just wondering is anyone else is having this issue? and can help me understand what's going on Or if the battery in my instinct 2 solar is just faulty?

I brought my watch 5 days ago. (Love the instinct 2 solar just putting it out there) First day battery was fine but now the battery is draining drastically over the last 4 days, I thought it was me and it was because I have been playing around with it alot.

I've got the latest update  8.10 and did a factory reset thinking that might fix it but it didnt...

Ran a little test- Full charge (28days) 5:30pm - 4:50am (10 days remaining) a majority of that time I was asleep wearing it to track my sleep.

Minium use bewteen those times.

My settings are

The pulse oximeter is set to -manual
I have auto lock -on
Heart rate -on
Connected to phone for calls and text but app notifications are turned off.
Back light set to 5%
Glace -off

Is this normal?

  • You've had it for just five days. Get the watch configured fully, allow it to get a handle on the consumption based on your final configuration and usage, and then see what happens.

    1. FWIW, I do 1-2 hours or more of nearly daily GPS tracking, sleep O2 and sleep tracking, 24 hour pulse and I charge to the 80-85% range to extend the life of the battery and I consistently have around 48% on the seventh day. I also enable battery saver during sleep hours which only disconnects the phone and stops updating the data fields on the watch face for a mild saving.
  • Thanks for replying, I appreciate it. I'm just worried my battery might be faulty, I been changing my settings/configuration around to try and figure out why there's such a big battery loss.

So it's normal for the battery life to go from 26 days fully charged down to 10 days over 11.2 hours?

I'll set up my final configuration for how I want to use it and give it a full charge  and see how it goes over the next 2 week.

Thanks again for the advice mate Thumbsup

I'll update at the end of the 2 weeks

  • I noticed that behaviour when I changed the pulse oximeter to monitor during sleep. Are you sure it's set to manual?

I have a I2s (no solar) and for me the worst power consumption is GPS.

30 min run, chest strap and GPS usage is something about 7% battery loss.

  • Yeah 100% pulse oximeter is set to manual. I've got my final configuration for me watch set. Which ups at 31days full battery charge but I'm still losing heaps of battery over night. Over 7 hours my battery charge went from 31days (100%)  to 15 days (43%) and all my watch is doing is heart rate tracking, So I can track my sleep.

  • I just started having this issue. Let me know what I should do.

  • when loosing more than 50 percentage in one night sth. is obviously wrong.

can you try to disable the watch's Bluetooth connection over night?

my watch sometimes looses Connection and is then getting stuck in some Infinite loop getting connected/disconnected which drains also the battery

  • I'm starting to see some peculiar battery issue on my Instinct 2 solar, too. I have the watch for ~4 months (bought as soon as it was available) and typically I get around 14-16 days of battery life with substantial GPS and activity recording (~8h of GPS+GLONASS recording, with additional 2-4 hours of GPS-less activities like strength or pool swim). I last charged my watch 9 days ago and I'm already at 20% (6d) battery life. Same amount of activities and sun exposure.

Today morning I had 28%/9d of battery and went for a quick 1h 15m run and my battery dropped by 6% (clear sky, yet 40% of run under the trees). Hour after finishing the run the battery dropped another 2%.

I'm hoping it's some beta firmware issue (stock watchface, no custom apps etc), since I'm running 8.63, but first week of running this FW the battery drain was same as with stable.

Anyone knows if I can replace the watch based on this issue? Does replacing work worldwide or it works different based on region?

EDIT: So maybe it's a non-issue. My previous charge (I keep up notes, hehe) lasted from May 18th till June 2nd (which is ~15 days and I still had juice for 3 days). During this time I used up 7 hours 55 minutes of GPS tracking. After charging the watch on June 2nd till today I managed to squeeze 9h 12mins of GPS activities, so I guess this is just me going for more bike rides. I hope at least.

  • I'll try disconnect my phone during sleep hours but I still loose a lot of battery even during the day

    100% battery at 5:15am

    61% battery at 10:18am

Solar instinct 2 was in smart watch mode, during work hours so I wasn't playing around on it on anything like that, just over 5 hours my watch had lost 39% battery charger and that's whith some solar exposure in between that time.

Is this a normal rate of battery lose? Or is my watch faulty?

  • Sounds very much like a faulty watch. In 24 hours I got a battery drain of ~5%.

I would suggest to contact the Garmin support

  • Even after a factory reset your device drains battery so much, I also strongly believe your watch is faulty
