Garmin instinct 2 and waypoints

Hello all

I searched a lot about my question, but couldn't find an answer. Basically what I'm looking for is simple: I'd like to be able to track direction and distance from 1 waypoint without actually navigating towards it. In other words, the only way I could find was launch the navigation activity, select the waypoint from the list and then start navigating until I reach that point and the navigation stops. But I don't want this, I simply would like the watch to continue measuring the distance and the direction even if I reach that destination and then move away, pretty much like I can do with my foretrex 601.

Not sure I was really clear,

Thanks all

  • So you main issue is that if you reach your destination the navigation stops completely? You'd prefer the map and navigation screen to stay on after reaching your destination to be able to see distance to last navigation point? I don't think it's possible to directly configure Instinct 2 this way (and Instinct 1, too). Here are some ideas you could try:

    • add map screen to your activity prior to using navigation (this obviously won't work if you're relying solely on 'Navigation' activity - consider using Walk or Hike with map added to it's screens permanently - you can start navigation during any GPS activity by holding menu during activity and using navigation from there). With the map screen added to activity you will see breadcrumbs showing your movements and all custom waypoints uploaded via Garmin Explore even if you did not start navigating.
    • you could add a point with Garmin Explore to the same place where your course destination is - those points exist on map regardless of currently running course and will be visible on the map. If the navigation finishes you will still see the point on the map and you should get distance to this point on the map, too. Unlike waypoints on courses created with Garmin Connect, Garmin Explore waypoints do not need to be on your navigation path and you have a bigger selection of icons (I like to place stuff like 'water' or 'hut' or 'peak' this way, while hiking or trail running - helps to orient yourself).
  • To be honest, I didn't get the first option. I already have the map showing on the activity I'm using (basically a customized hiking activity), and I believe what you're suggesting here will still not give me the information about meters and direction, it will just displays all the saved waypoints on the map, isn't it?

About the 2nd option, I could try it, but how will I constantly see the distance from a specific waypoint? I don't know if you're familiar with the foretrex, but this one gives you the possibility to select a waypoint and then constantly see it on the map view along with direction and remaining meters without the need to actually starting an activity. I'd like to replicate this behavior somehow, this is really the only thing I'm missing of the foretrex..

  • I simply would like the watch to continue measuring the distance and the direction even if I reach that destination and then move away, pretty much like I can do with my foretrex 601.

The technique you described is your best option.  The only extra step would be to re-start navigation to the same Waypoint/Location as you move away from the selected Waypoint.

  • Yeah that is what I was afraid of.. unless somebody comes up with an app that does that specifically maybe..

  • Solutions I proposed are definitely hacks, so unfortunately it won't cover your use case. Restarting navigation seems like the best hack

I'd like to be able to control this behavior - perhaps we could try filing a feature request to Garmin team?

  • In the post above you mentioned:

"you could add a point with Garmin Explore to the same place where your course destination is - those points exist on map regardless of currently running course and will be visible on the map. If the navigation finishes you will still see the point on the map and you should get distance to this point on the map, too"

How would you get the distance in the map ?

  • Yeah, I realized you could only get the distance if you started navigation toward the saved waypoint in the watch - dirty hack. Inconvenient at least :)

  • Yeah that's very uncomfortable as I need this information very quick.. Disappointed

For now, I submitted the idea to Garmin :)
