Sleep Tracking

There is a video on youtube of "The Quantified Scientist" in which he investigates sleep tracking, among other things.

He says that Instinct 2 often interprets deep sleep as light sleep or REM.

Without comparing with other devices I can say that I also have this impression.

  • Does anyone else have the same impression?
  • In the beta version 8.04 "Improved sleep tracking" is mentioned.
Can we expect improvements in that area?

It is worth noting that according to his tests the older vivomove sport delivers better results than newer smartwatches like the Instinct 2.

JFYI, at older Garmin models, the sleep analysis…

Comparing the sleep analysis of Instinct 2 with the old Instinct, the patterns are practically identical, and rather credible (both devices use different sleep tracking - at the old Instinct it is not the on-device analysis as at Instinct 2, but the old on-server method). I did not conduct any polysomnography, though, so cannot know how accurate it is. Did the Quantified Scientist compare the results with data from polysomnography, or just made some guesses?

If they wrote they improved the sleep tracking, then I would indeed expect improvements Slight smile

I've also seen the video by The Quantified Scientist.  Great content and yes he compares many devices to control polysomnography results.

I've run all the betas including 8.4 and up, currently running 8.10 and I have seen no improvements to sleep tracking.  It continues to appear that it interprets deep sleep as light sleep or REM.  Many night's I report zero deep sleep on my Garmin device, but have over a year of Fitbit data that indicated deep sleep phase every night.  I'd like to think how rested I feel I'm hitting the deep sleep phase, so it's a bit frustrating to see.

JFYI, at older Garmin models, the sleep analysis is done on the server, not on the watch. And the processing algorithms change and improve over time, of course, too. So, paradoxically, the older models in fact use not only the most recent algorithms on the server, but they also profit from the much higher processing power of the servers. On the other side, you won't get any sleep analysis without uploading the sleep data to the server, at the old models.

Sorry all, I re-watched the video and it was a Dream 2 EEG device.  He only mentioned he was interested in testing against a polysomnography device.

For those interested the instinct 2 is on the Y and Dream 2 is on the X of the chart.  54.9% of the time the Instinct 2 recorded sleep as light instead of deep, compared to the Dream 2 EEG.

  • Understood but kind of disappointing to get worse results with a newer watch. Is it not possible to combine the evaluation with the new watches and correct the values after a synchronization on the server?

By the way, this Review describes exactly the same experiences regarding the unreliable sleep tracking with zero deep sleep.

Having the sleep score also going into the body battery unfortunately makes a very important function of the watch almost worthless.

  • If sleep algos were done on the server and not the watch, your watch sleep cycles wouldn't be able to be immediately displayed on the watch when you wake up

Re-read my post - I wrote "at older Garmin models", referring to the "older vivomove"" from the previous post that I was replying to.  Instinct 2 is not an older model, it has a built-in sleep analysis, and you can find also in the secs. In contrary, older models such as the mentioned vivomove, or Instinct 1st gen, won't show you the sleep data on the watch.
