Question about "off course" when I'm not.

I just picked up an Instinct 2 and it's my first fitness watch. I've been able to download a GPX file from AllTrails and load it as a Course to my watch. Have had no complaints about being "off course" until yesterday. Along the out-and-back section, everything was fine. But while doing the loop section counterclockwise, I was told I was off course the entire time. The map itself has tiny arrows indicating a clockwise progression, but that's not what I wanted to do.

Is there a way around this issue? I would like to be able to change it on the fly if possible as I sometimes don't know which direction I want to go in until I get there. For the record, I carry my phone (and thus Garmin Explore) with me on hikes.

Thanks.

  • The off-course notification was entirely correct in your example.

You have the option to "Do Course in Reverse" when you select the navigation course.  Unfortunately, when you select this option, you don't get Turn-by-Turn navigation prompts, only the displayed course on the map page.

Another option is to create two courses prior to your hike; one in each direction.  You can then select either direction to receive the correct TBT prompts for the direction you choose to hike.

With Explore you can create a different course than you are hiking on the fly and sync to the watch for navigation.

  • Thank you much for the reply and the options.
