Can Instinct 2 display Asian characters?

Hello guys!

I am wondering whether Asian characters are supported on Instinct 2 now. Because of some reasons, I deal with Asian people quite often, thus I receive massages containing Asian characters almost everyday. And those notifications containing Asian characters will be displayed as unreadable codes on Instinct 1, which is just...painful... I want to upgrade my Instinct 1 solar to Instinct 2 tactical solar coyote tan. Could you guys help me test it out?

Many thanks!

  • Following test message was sent:

(Translation: I am glad to let you know that it works very well on my Instinct 2 Solar Tactical)

    我很高兴让你知道,它在我的本能2太阳战术上效果很好

I was hoping it would work, but when I sent this message to my Instinct 2 Solar Tactical, it looked like this:

Just for reference, it looked like this on my epix Gen2:

Both watches were purchased directly from Garmin in the USA.

So, it looks like the USA version of the Instinct 2 Solar Tactical does not support Chinese characters.

  • Thank you so much! Maybe I should consider buying Fenix 7...But I just really like the high contrast monochromatic display on instinct...

  • Consider buying the APAC version of Instinct 2

  • SE Asian/APAC languages can now be added but only to our Epix 2 series and Fenix 7 series. The Instinct 2 series remains regional with unique software on them supporting the language of the SE Asia in the country they are bought in.

If bought outside of that SE Asia country, the watch will not have SE Asia languages on the watch and they cannot be added.

  • On my Instinct 2 Solar Tactical I have the following languages installed:

    Arabic

    [Armenian?]

    Cestina

    Dansk

    Eesti

    Deutsch

    [Unknown – Divehi?]

    English

    Espanol

    Francais

    Hebrew

    Hrvatski

    Italiano

    Latviesu

    Lietuviu

    Magyar

    Nederlands

    Norsk

    Polski

    Portugues

    Romana

    Pyccknn

    Slovencina

    Slovenscina

    Suomi

    Svenska

    Turkce

    YkpaiHCbKa

And when I go to Express to add any available languages, I see this:

As "There are no additional language files available to install," and none of the installed languages support Asian characters, I am left to assume that the Instinct 2 watches sold in the U.S. are not capable of supporting APAC languages; e.g. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.

Since the original post was about support of "Asian characters," I am still of the opinion that the Instinct 2 sold in U.S. can not support Asian characters.

Am I missing something?  Or probably just reading too much into your post?

  • You are right. You have the apac models, sold in asia/pacific area, and ROW models, stay for rest of the world. I live inside the apac area (Thailand) but i always buy my watches either in europe or USA. Reason for that, the software updates on the apac models lag a year behind.

Yes, I understand that has been the case until the "newer generation" watches epix Gen2 and fenix 7.  On my epix Gen2 watch, purchased in the U.S., I have ALL the languages available, including Asian languages like Chinese, Japanese and Korean.  My epix Gen2 can also accurately display Chinese characters in messages.

The issue at hand is that my Instinct 2 Solar Tactical, also a "newer generation" watch as per  post above, and also purchased in the U.S., does not have any Asian languages available for download and does not support display of Chinese characters in messages.

This leads me to believe that the epix Gen2 has only one model for BOTH ROW and APAC.  I assume this is the same for the fenix 7 series watches. But it appears, and has not been confirmed by anyone yet, that the Instinct 2 family of watches still has a separate APAC version.

  • I stand corrected on my original understanding. I double checked what I original stated and learned the following:

SE Asian/APAC languages can now be added but only to our Epix 2 series and Fenix 7 series. The Instinct 2 series remains regional with unique software on them supporting the language of the SE Asia country they are bought in. If bought outside of that country, it will not have the language and it cannot be added.

  • Um, can the APAC branches help to flash the watch? or can they swap the device with a small fee?

  • Good question. Your current watch would not be able to be flashed with the SE Asia language but you can always reach out to your nearest SE Asia region Outdoor Product Support to inquire on an exchange for the watch out of that region. Start here and select that country. There may be additional costs associated with customs when the watch arrives back to you at your country depending on policies.
