[BUG?] weird estimation of the time left battery.

hello,

first if i set the backlit to 100% and later to 5% (u can test with any 2 different values), even if the light is off, then the battery life indicator changes (the percentage doesnt' change, it is only the number of days left)

i could understand this if the light is on, because it would be an estimation according to the real used power, but if it is off then the value should not change because the used power doesn't really change.

is it a bug or a feature?

  • I just got my Instinct 2 Standard last Sunday.  I didn't charge it after the initial setup since it had plenty of battery. I don't remember what the battery life indicator showed at the time, but it made it 5 days until the low battery indicator turned on with under 2 days remaining.  I charged it last night for the first time.  After it reached 100% charge, the battery indicator has showed "4d" all day. I find this really odd since the watch specs estimate 28 days of battery, and it lasted more than 4 days on the partial charge out of the box.

For me, I've had the backlight turn on with gestures and have not used the watch to record any activities yet. I tried turning the backlight gestures off, but it didn't change the estimated days remaining.  I'm wondering if this is some sort of bug, if there is something wrong with my watch, or if there is something about the battery indicator that I am not understanding.

EDIT:  Trying to find additional information in this forum, I came across a post that indicates Pulse Ox is a battery drain.

After noticing that the sleep tracking indicated that no Pulse Ox data was being recorded for the first several days, I looked up how to enable this setting on Thursday and set it for all day recording.  After seeing the other post mentioning Pulse Ox in regards to battery life, the recently charged watch went from 4 days remaining for all day recording, 9 days for "during sleep," and 27 days for "manual check."

  • the estimation method is not correct. it should indicates the time-left according to the real power used rather than the settings.

in my case if i set the backlit to 100% (and don't use the light), the watch should not indicates fewer days-left than if i set the backlit to 5% (and don't use the light either) , because in both cases the backlit is not used.

when you hold the menu button you can see the battery energy with both displays successively: time-left / percentage

the percentage doesn't change (and should not) but the time-left changes (and should not...)

if i use the light, then in this case the indicator would be correct if it indicates a fewer number of days-left because the power  would be really more used.

this error perverts the battery life estimation, which becomes useless

  • this error

This is not a flaw and is no different with other models like the fenix series.

  • It sure isn't diffirent with other models. But he is right it is stupid that it changes battery life days weirdly. I was also upset in my case when my battery went from 50 to 48 days in one day. And I used them just for time.

  • This is not a flaw and is no different with other models like the fenix series.

argue, why this is not a flaw?

  • I've played a bit around with power and battery things and I believe currently the estimation is based on a mixture of the settings and historical power usage, but no idea what time-frame garmin takes into account.

I've written an own small app to have better estimations: apps.garmin.com/.../572b8232-7fb6-4e4f-a938-2395d0df3c7c
