Washed out/dim backlight example

Posting another example of how dim and washed out the backlighting seems on the new I2.  Also how the new display is more purple than blue.  Here’s my old Instinct side by side with my new Instinct 2.  I have them wrapped around a squirt bottle so they're perfectly aligned.  The new I2 has the orange strap.  Is the poor backlight to increase battery life?    I know there are already posts about this but I figure the more we give example, maybe we’ll get a response from Garmin.  I may be sending the I2 back and sticking with the original Instinct.  The new bells and whistles don’t mean much to me if I can’t see the watch face for half the time (I’m a night owl).  Cheers !

  • In all honesty who needs to view their watch from an angle like that. I mean really is it laziness to rotate your wrist in bed at night or a dark room to see it? If we want a crystal clear blingy screen get the top of the line garmin watches. I have zero issues with mine being like this! It’s not labeled as their top of the line screens.

  • It's kind of tragic. Garmin seems to have reached a new level of Nokia / Boeing.

Up till now, their hardware was mostly fine, but their software sucked for a long time, until it finally matured shortly before the end of product life.

Now, it's also the hardware. It's not just the Instinct 2 display, it's the gap between casing and glass, and the rough, dust-prone texture of the inner ring. The constant mushy buttons for many. And the obvious hardware problems with the Fenix 7 / Epix 2 regarding bluetooth music quality.

Come on, Garmin, we like your products, but you are taking us for granted.

  • I don't agree. It could be better at no cost, but it isn't, due to negligence.

It's nice that it doesn't bother you, but it irritates many.

Turning your arm more than necessary costs time.

  • I agree that it should be equal to or better than the Instinct 1 but this watch wasn’t intended to have a fancy display. Not trying to be rude to anyone that has an issue with it just my opinion. I just strongly believe that if screen quality is a big factor then this shouldn’t have been the watch to purchase from the get go. Hopefully it can be fixed with an update. Now the screen/bezel gap is an issue considering this watch is meant to get dirty/abused. Surprisingly mine does not have that screen gap.posting pics in a few hours.

Good Lord. How slowly do you turn your arm to view your watch?

  • How about you stop being so condescending in all your comments (e.g. calling people children for criticizing a product being a downgrade compared to the previous version in certain areas, instead of being the upgrade it was advertised)?

Just ONE of many use cases which you so ignorantly assume don't exist because you don't experience them: I often bring our toddler to bed and either lay still in an unnatural position and or don't want to raise my arm fully because the bright light might wake up the kid again. The IG2's  screen brightness (and odd polarization) are considerably worse compared to the IG1 which I had before.

It is not childish or entitled consumer behavior if you criticize that a supposed successor product (with a higher price tag as well) is performing considerably worse in certain aspects than the predecessor.

  • I would really like an official statement regarding this as well @Garmin-Jimmy @Garmin-Chris, as it stands I share the suspicion of bad quality control/manufacturing error and honestly expect a warranty repair/exchange from Garmin if that's the case.

  • Agreed.  All the folks who doesn’t care about the problem or don’t think it’s important- just walk on by.  Those of us who spent $350 for (base model) for improved battery life and, frankly, a bunch of features I want, but will likely rarely use, shouldn’t have to sacrifice screen brightness/viewing angle to get those new features.  It’s like when I roll over a car lease every 3 years and just get the newest model year of the same car.  When I turn my head to the left, I still expect to be able to see out the window.

  • Uh oh, looks like someone has put the screen polariser in the wrong way around then!
We need an Instinct 2 v2 already, where they also push the bezel on top all the way on to avoid the gap allowing debris entry. oh and while you're at it please go back to standard flat glass so we can fit a glass screen protector!

  • I'm having the exact same issue with my gi2 compared to my g1 solar. I thought it was my imagination or something. How the hell is the gi2 screen fine when upside down. They must have installed the polarizing screen upside down. Has anyone compared this with models in a store to see if they all have this. I love the watch otherwise but the screen really sucks to see at any normal angle.
