Instinct 2s font size / weight in data screens - chances of more options?

For those who know Garmin well, what are the chances of them providing more options for displaying the activity data fields in future updates... specifically in relation to font size and weight, and the option to not display field names for every field (useful for some fields, not necessary for others)?

My eyesight is not 20/20 but not far off, but the size of the font (determined partly by the inclusion of the field names) and the weight renders a lot of the data almost unreadable in some layouts when running (i.e. quick glance at a moving target) ...

For example, the info in the little circle is almost always unreadable unless very simple (e.g. heart rate) - and whilst this is to be expected perhaps, on the watch face they manage to get the day and date in there quite clearly, making better use of the space and using bolder fonts.  Similarly, if using a stacked or side-by-side 4-field layout (effectively 3, given that the circle has limited functionality) the fonts are too fine (they don't need to be, the field is wide) and restricted by the field name.  The 5-field layout has a very small field at the bottom that is basically unreadable when running, but probably wouldn't be if the font were a bit heavier.  Lose the field names and you'd have a much clearer display on the small screen.  Again, on the watch face they use bolder fonts for the time and the minor data fields (battery etc) which are much more visible.

Basically, the 2s is ideal for me re. size / weight, and I prefer the more utilitarian style compared to the Fenix (which seems too nice to use in the wild, and feels too heavy ... I'd spend all my time worrying about bashing it up) - but the data display is just not as good as it could be (regardless of the screen size).

So... what are the odds of this changing?

  • Second this! Having the option to remove data field labels and increasing the font size would be a huge help.

The possibility is built-in. Just hold the menu button in the concerned activity profile, select Activity Settings » Data Screens and adjust it as needed.

I did that on screens of most of my activities, on my Instinct 2. I kept all the original screens, but I added a separate screen with just a single field (better told two - since the round field is always present) for every metrics I use to consult frequently (for example pace, distance, cadence,...). This screen uses the biggest font, and I have no problems reading it without glasses even in bad light conditions. The screen with two fields (+ the round one) also uses rather big font that can be read relatively well.

  • Agreed the single data field is much better. My main issue is with the triple field view (4 field including the circle). A lot of space is wasted on the data field labels. I can remember these easily enough and would rather the space be used for a larger font. This is what the default was on my old forerunner 35.

I tried to get around the problem by using a custom data field (HMs DIY) and was able to remove the labels but I am still limited in the font size I can select.

Simple solution - use only screens with lower number of fields and sufficiently large font. You can split the information onto several screens, if it does not fit on one.

  • Problem is, it's often useful / necessary to have 3x visible fields during a training run... so for example if you follow one of the Garmin Connect training plans they will often have steps that are a mix of time and distance... e.g. Step 1 - 15 mins warm up; Step 2 - Run 1km @ threshold pace; Step 3 - Recover 1m 30s etc... so whilst you could sit on the training screen (which is not editable and seems to show things the 'wrong way round' - so a 'time' step will show 'distance' as the biggest field, with time relegated to the circle) I find it better to basically have 3 fields (lap distance, lap time, lap pace) to ensure you can get all the info you need for each step in one glance rather than having to have two screens set up and then flick between them every time a step changes...  but YMMV obviously...

  • Having multiple screens with a smaller number of fields is the only available way to have a large font on the screen. You cannot have in the same time large font and 3 or more fields, so you'll have to chose the way that is more acceptable. The fonts for each screen type are fixed, and cannot be customized.

Getting some specific data in different fonts, different layout, or graphics instead of numbers, might be possible with a Garmin IQ app - so you could search the app store whether a fitting app is available, or asking a developer to create one specifically tailored for you and for your watch model.
