Garmin Instinct 2 - first impressions

An hour ago I received my Instinct 2 (not solar). First thing ( after I read this post) I checked angles with backlight. I have mixed feelings about this. Photos attached in "washed out" topics are pretty close to my impression but with two important addons:

1. Picture at GI2 screen seems to have more contrast compared to GI1 Solar. Not big difference but noticeable.

2. Angles issue is here as well BUT it looks guys in Garmin just rotated polarization layer because I receive the same washed out effect in GI1 when I look at screen from "above". Of course if I would have option I would choose GI1 variant. It's much less visible in real life. For example now I was checking saturation at GI2 in quite dark conditions and screen was washed like in very cheap digital watch or phone.

I also checked if straps form GI1 are compatible with GI2. Yest, they are. Just pieces of rubber are bit taller, closer to bezel from both sides.

Widgets: I can't see any advantage with this new solution. Like previously I have to click to go to next one but previously I had more info while here is bare minimum

Generally new design of watch is more sporty than outodoorsy to me. Previous looks better for me.

Glass is not flat as it was pointed here. I hope foil instead of glass will be able to adhere to this surface. I'm not sure though if I will test this because I'll give myself few days to check if I won't return GI2.

I can see visual advantage of normal version against Solar. In normal version screen nicely blends with rest of glass while in Solar version this purple solar cell is very noticeable. The same was with GI1 versions.

My main reason to update Instinct was to get more sport functions, mainly VO2 MAX which I couldn't update with GI1 and Zwift. I hope now it will work.

  • I had exactly the same effect like person in another thread. Here is his photo:

Of course I could live with that, but for me is step backward. Let's summarize:

-sleeping analysis: far from real, guessing in big part

-oxygen level: the same, very often number is too low

    -step counter: not too precise

    -floor counter: not too precise

-height measure: while riding a bicycle it can show 2 or even 3 times higher than in reality (probably due to wind in sensor but Garmin doesn't inform about this or solve it in any way)

-pulse sensor: of course not precise, Garmin gives info about this

What left I have also in GI1: GPS tracking, multi sport activities and very good battery life.

GI2 is far from being cheap, I would expect screen won't be worse than GI1, but for it is in this case. For me it look it can be quite easy fixed with hardware update.

Anyway, for now I'll stay with GI1, later on maybe I'll go for Fenix 7. It would be very nice to have proper maps instead bread crumbs.

  • I don't have to bend it! I see it well without backlighting and I light up at night, I now have 10% brightness and I see it well. I'll put a photo here.

  • Well, you see, I'm now testing IS1 and IS2 and measuring everything practically the same. IS2 makes resolution much better readable and clear. From a certain angle, where one looks most often, visibility is better. From another, maybe worse. At night, when I wake up, I read what time it is without any problems. Whether it's a few percent worse or better, I don't care. Yes, I respect when someone is dissatisfied not to buy a watch or return it.

Photographed in the room early in the morning with poor visibility. Then in a dark corner. IS 1 and IS2 10% brightness. I'm satisfied, I see it well.

  • After my experience with foil on screen I can say there is no issue at all with this kind of protection. It was normal process with applying it to screen. I was afraid a little bit it will stick out morning after but nothing bad happened. In fact it was pretty difficult to remove this foil. Fingernail was not enough. I had to use needle to disconnect edge of the foil to remove it.
