Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

  • I'm glad I maintained skepticism because this definitely shows that while the panels appear different (which Garmin has been transparent about), the new ones are legible even on extreme angles.  They don't look as good at 87 degrees from vertical when you're really trying ro force through camera work that the numbers aren't as visible, but they are and reflect more or less what I saw in store.  The numbers are perfectly visible.  It's just when compared one then thinks the G1 looks better.  Meanwhile, the reality is these are black and white panels and it's not about how good it looks, but rather if the data is visible or not and it is.

I will say I am not so happy that Garmin went with a domed screen for which there are no screen protectors available yet.  The wet application ones I've had good experiences with with my phones, but they aren't available yet.

  • Check out my thread, there is also info about screen protector: forums.garmin.com/.../garmin-instinct-2---first-impressions

  • Yes, I don't understand why some people think that when Garmin writes that the display is different, that they're arguing that it should be the same. :-) Try to put the display at 5% brightness and go in full sun with Fenix 6 or 7, put next IS 2 and you'll see. I watch the watch 99% during the day, it is an outdoor watch. At night in low light, I do not need the display backlight, I also have gestures turned off. If I wake up at night, I use the backlight of the display, I can see it well. I will not try coal where he will not see. :-) A new solar panel can probably be used for a different shade, where the sun's contribution is about 2 times higher. That's important to me! I have a watch for a month, it came with about 70% of the battery, I tried several GPS activities, 10 indoor weeks a week and I charged them once and they are still recharging, that's March, I'm from the Czech Republic, where the sun doesn't shine much in winter. Satisfaction for me.

  • It's also funny to see how at least one of your posts (maybe the one with the pics) was voted down.

Lucky for me, the prices dropped shortly again and I got my IS2 Tactical for a great price.  Since Garmin recommended returning my IS1 Tac, I will just send it in and be done with it.  Will contact the makers of wet foil protectors and see what they say.

I really appreciate you sticking it out to ask questions repeatedly, point out the inconsistencies, and to post your own findings.

  • Yes thank you. I had a screen protector on IS 1. But I won't put it on IS 2 yet, I'll see what it lasts. If you have a positive experience with the protector that does not affect solar charging, please write.

  • I can't state anything about solar functionality, but on all my phones, I have the wet-application foils and in the case of my main phone, the foil has been on for three years and is only now looking ratty after incredible amounts of abrasions, sports, a couple of falls, and even a couple of peel ups that aren't even noticeable after reapplication or some alcohol soaking in and readhering the foil.  From time to time, I've used auto wax and everything has been great.

My phone's screen is a curved type.

  • Yes, they did... after the problems were reported; then they followed it up with ridiculous excuses, and tried to pass it as an intended design feature (which, again, they never mentioned or advertised  prior to any of the complaints).  Listen, the most sensible explanation came as a response from a YouTube reviewer [Alpha Pews], to a comment I left on his comparison/review of the watch; you can read the comment here if so you'd like:

  • The partial absurdity of this discussion mirrors the arguments I was served when I said my GI1S has nowhere near the battery life that Garmin promised. The same I-don't-have-this-so-you-are-wrong logic was applied. Funny haha, apart from if you spent money for something that is not like you had reasonably expected.

  • Thanks for linking to the video - I absolutely agree with your sentiment about the sensible explanation. Alpha Pews won a subscriber with his in-depth response.

  • Just received mine and tested it in a room with no lights and I am happy to say this entire thread and crusade is a sham.  While there was that characteristic inversion, the time is visible to the most extreme angles and readable until the screen becomes blocked.  This whole thread is complete nonsense.

Sorry, no dark bathroom pics at a 89.5 degree angle, but here's my side by side.

I simply can't believe the OP isn't getting traction, so he's going outside to social networking now.
