Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

  • It seems like a couple keep saying they want Garmin to make a direct statement to them and it really looks transparent like they're trying to shame Garmin into it.  One has said Garmin has given a provate answer and was offered 30 days to return the watch.  So I don't know where this is going now.  Just seems very strange that we're back to the point of some pressing and seemingly trying to somehow shame Garmin into making a statement to them.

  • Garmin is great! Garmin produces the best fitness watches ever... it has no comparison.  Garmin knows exactly what the end-user needs, and doesn't bother with what they think they need...  that silliness only leads to underperforming rubbish. Garmin watches have no design flaws whatsoever, and every model released is uniquely better than the previous. They are worth every single cent... an outstanding and unprecedented value actually.  None should dare question Garmin's genius omniscience, but rather should feel privileged to the opportunity of paying a pittance worth for the major features introduced in each incremental model.  None shall feel the need to aggressively justify their individual choice in purchasing a less than optimal product, because no such thing exists, or is feasible, from the GOAT that is Garmin!

    Is that better?

  • Thank you blue fish, it looks great, and I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy its performance. These Tactix series watches are great, and I'm sure the 7 Pro will not disappoint.  As for me, however, my Delta Solar Ballistics is still doing the job well; the T7P upgrades/features are, for my use case, negligible.  I would've liked the light feature, but I wouldn't use the touch feature as much... not as practical as one might imagine when actually used in the field (a lot of accidental swipes, gloved hand, etc) and I would end up defaulting to the buttons anyway. Would've been nice to go back to the weight of the titanium (as was with the Charlie) instead of the SS of the Delta, but the finish on it would've suffered a lot with what I put it through (again, as with my Charlie).  Don't get me wrong, despite of what I said about my Delta, I would've upgraded anyhow... lol, it's what we do; but after this little issue with the Instinct 2 Solar Tactical I now have a different outlook towards Garmin, and am satisfied with settling for the products that I already have, and which work;  no more costly upgrades for me until there are major changes in design and features, and then only after they've been proven not to have ridiculously inane QC issues which affect basic functionality (which, btw, is not the case with the Tactix).  Like I said, you'll be happy with your 7P... I'll just make my Delta look like it, lol.

EDIT: Photo edited for 9641143's sake.  How's that, sir? Better, or are the corners (background) distracting your focus as well?

  • What's the focus of the photo?  The watch or sending a message with to someone that you have a frog skeleton tattoo?  The composition (just under 50% is the watch) really makes it look like you're trying to sendi a message regarding the right side of it.

  • Holy Christ, lol... you turn anything into something, don't you!?

  • No, it's actually context.  This thread serves absolutely no constructive purpose.  It was filled with accusations, conspiracy theories, and demands for some sort of sit-down where Garmin directly talks to you.  When it didn't happen, you attempted to bring it elsewhere on the internet and that fizzled.  You yourself even used the valor angle to try to strong-arm Garmin into talking directly.  Here, it's simple to take the pic of the watch if that's the subject.  It's literally less than 50% of the photo and you're again hinting at the valor angle to get a response. I could give a child a camera, tell them to take a pic of something, and that will actually dominate the frame because it's instinctual to make the actual subject of the photo the majority of the frame.  I've seen your posts elsewhere online after you linked us to YouTube and there's more of this and other stuff I would run away from if I were Garmin. I can't see this as being constructive when the goal is some sort of one on one meeting.

Now there's a huge disconnect where there's talk now that Garmin made no public or private statement which is utterly false because those direct statements made privately were posted here and even the offer of a full refund in 30 days was offered.

What else needs to happen?  You've bailed on the Instinct and still want Garmin to talk to you.  It is absolutely no surprise that they are staying away and it's because this thread is toxic and not constructive.  I'd actually love to get more on the technical perspectives and the choices made regarding the screen, but it's clear that this is impossible, likely due to the toxicity of this thread.  Your last mocking post exemplifies this.  You even accused me of being a Garmin employee, despite my post history here.

That's the rundown of what's going on here: a couple of people are trying to strong-arm Garmin into some sort of direct meeting.  For what, no one knows, but that's why this thread keeps on going.  The very people saying they're bailing or bailed on the Instinct keep demanding a meeting with Garmin.

  • I've not tried to strongarm anyone, nonetheless Garmin.  I've made my intent and position very clear from the beginning, and have not attempted to dissuade anyone from either purchasing or enjoying a purchase of any Garmin product. As for posting here in the forum, that was done at the direct suggestion of a customer service rep (as that he could gather more info from users and direct the issue to the engineering team; read previous posts where that was explained); I've not accused you of being a Garmin employee at any time, and I think you've confused that as well... I honestly do not care if you are.  I've expressed my specific case and usage, and have commented as to why this was an issue for me, and thusly presume that it would be for others with similar circumstances.  I've continued to post solely because many have had questions (much of those wondering as to any follow-up or resolution from Garmin), and because I am the OP after all.  Regardless of my outlook towards Garmin, or the fact that I've given up on this issue, I've maintained a respectful support towards those which have not (instead of criticizing them for disagreeing with my views and opinions).  As for the picture, I mimicked Blue Fish's wrist-shot and added it to a sensible and friendly reply. Somehow you read more into it, and considering the context of the reply to his post and picture, I'm still trying to connect the dots to your conclusion; this "thing" isn't that deep, man... stop psychoanalyzing every post, inserting a distrusting and negative twist on everything.  Nothing here has made a difference towards the original issue, and similarly nothing here is going to "bring Garmin down" (or whatever it is that you perceive to be happening); so let people ask their questions, make their comments, and feel free to disagree within context... just as you said.  If it makes you feel any better, I can end the thread (if I can figure out how to do so), and you can then move on to more important things; I've spent too much time on this as it is.

  • Unfortunately, I've not seen you denounce the conspiracy theories about Garmin employees, or anything else.  I also think the Garmin employee you spoke to didn't think this would become as toxic as it is.  They made suggestions in good faith and the toxicity and strong-arming here and taking to the internet to "expose" a corporate conspiracy that doesn't exist makes it more or less certain we actually won't get some insight into the engineering and implementation here.  I'm sure the recent mocking post you made won't help anything if you are reading it like everyone else would read it.

  • Why should he denounce (LMAO, are you serious with your rethoric?) any conspiracy theories when no one but you pretends like they exist? Please, go outside and touch some grass.

  • No idea what that expression is supposed to mean, but ok:
