Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

  • Ok, not good. I hoped for it as I wanted to try out a non solar 2s. Now I don't need to try that out.

    Thx.

  • Jad an instinct 1, but not a 2, saw doctored comparison videos?  While I have both?

  • A lot of people that shared their opinion, that GI2's display performs worse in low light conditions with backlight on, own both versions, including me.

Just because you don't see this as an issue doesn't mean the various people that see this as an issue are wrong.

"Doctored videos" - LMAO again, I own both watches and the footage (be it photos or videos) posted here and elsewhere demonstrate the display behavior very accurate to what you can see in real life. And others have confirmed this as well.

  • BTW Anybody noticed change in backlight behavior recently?

  • I just got the I2s non-solar and directly compared it to my I2s solar and it is a visbile difference. But only when looking at it directly from the the top straight on the display, not from any ankle. Then it is almost the same. Quality seems the same. Reflections seem the same. But glare is there and it is visible making the tiny font even less readable. You can see something which looks like a way better dark contrast on the non-solar version. it looks "crisper". Defintely noticably better. Even though I would have prefered the white color of the Solar Surf I am going to stay with the non-solar I2s in dark grey. Plus I save 120€ for going with the normal non-solar instead of the Surf Solar. Big saving, almost a third of my paid price of the Surf Solar, all Instinct 2 verisons are already 50-120€ off the normal price here. Would have loved solar charging though but I guess they won''t change anything in font size so I need to get the most readable one.

EDIT: One more thing the solar panel does making it less bright. You need 10-20% higher brightness to get the same results as the non-solar device. So you lose more battery by making setting brightness higher but gain more because of solar. Of course during summer solar brings more battery then the 10-20% higher brightness setting loses but during winter it will probably lose more battery because of that. That makes the solar version somewhat obsolete imo.

  • I notice this too. In fact it's IMPOSSIBLE not to notice this.

It's worth mentioning that this issue doesn't only happen with the backlight on. It also happens when the backlight is off and the ceiling/desk lights hit the face from an off angle, looking at the watch from the bottom up (as presented in pictures/vids in this and other threads).

Whatever polarisation layer they have there is less than ideal and the solar layer seems to make a big impact and magnifying this effect.

  • True.  I've given up on it, and am very glad that I didn't get rid of my original GI Solar Tactical; I've been using it as EDC, and am enjoying it much more than the new one; it honestly feels like "upgraded" by reverting to the original... go figure, lol.  The GI2 ST now resides in my nightstand drawer to serve as a backup alarm; after pointing out the issues and user experience, I feel it would be a bit "weasely" of me to sell it forward, or to return it to the retailer  (which is not at fault, and will probably sell it as an open box item). $515 that would've been better spent towards a new optic, Austrian pew-pew, plate carrier, or bulk purchase of Dude Wipes... lol, how's that for "Tactical"!? Anyhow, hopefully you'll all have better luck in round #4 of the series.

  • Come on, there always has to be something. GI1 had problem with pressure sensor location, GI2 has tricky screen backlight. It looks like trade mark, but I'm afraid there is no prize for finding it ;)

For now I use GI2 and generally I'm happy with this watch, particularly with it's software, but when I cleaned minute ago my GI1 Solar to sell it I found I like it's design so much more than GI2. Unfortunately I won't get more advanced training options on GI1 so there is not too much choice.

I took some photos before I'll sell GI1 to remember how much better was it's screen, this is one of the pictures, not the most extreme. To be honest I envy other owners if they don't see here any problem. I would like to have this approach.

  • It depends on who uses and how. I have both IS 1 Solar and IS2 Solar Tactical, and if I didn't come across this thread, I wouldn't know that visibility is worse. When I want to look at my watch in absolute darkness, I turn my hand a few% differently. On the contrary, in the sun, at dusk, the visibility at 5% is perfect, there is no need to shine. My gestures are off. I put videos and photos here, many users don't even notice the difference, others see only this difference. The benefits outweigh, better charging and endurance, vidgets, resolution, sensor location, many new features, etc. I shouldn't. But everyone has their priorities.

  • I just even recreated the test and there's only one range of about 2 degrees, when viewing the watch on my left arm, between the left margin of the band and the "n" of the "down" label on the screen when visibility is not great and the inversion takes place.  It's so small that any other positioning of the arm is more likely and has a bigger Impact.

Overall, the visibility is so much better and the increase in resolution is beyond welcome.
