Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

  • I'm starting to wonder if things have been changed or if it varies between watch and watch. I find mine to become unreadable around 45 degrees. Much as in this video .

  • I can 100% confirm my suspicions that when photographed, the screen through the camera becomes unreadable WAY BEFORE it's unreadable to the naked eye.

This whole thing is just so sketchy.

  • I bought Instinct 2 again, I'll have it home in two days and check if anything is different from previous purchase. Generally this watch has everything I need and would be happy to stay with it. This daylight photo above doesn't count - daylight totally diminish effect mentioned in the title.

  • Sorry, no dark bathroom pics at a 89.5 degree angle, but here's my side by side.

The whole thread is about display + backlights. It's a shame if you can not read before answering.

  • Did you understand what he wrote? He confirmed that he can see the same issue in real life that the linked video shows...

  • Here's another one (just in case). The issue, by the way, IS not being able to read the screen easily while using the backlight IN A DARK ROOM OR AT NIGHT  (you know... when it is actually needed); and the problem being aggravated when looking at the watch in any other angle (shallow or acute) besides head-on from above.  Moreover, that the original version (which also has circular polarization) DOES NOT EXHIBIT THIS PROBLEM... yet the more expensive "newer" watch does.

  • I would never thought that because of Garmin I'll be looking at somebody's toilet paper in Internet ;)

DevilFrog, thanks for new photos. After tomorrow I'll check my new Instinct 2 and we will see if your particular model is affected stronger or all of current models have the same "feature".

To be honest I don't buy this explanation about different display. OK, it is of course bit different: there is bit higher resolution. What else? Domed glass doesn't count - this shape is outside, there is no need to change anything inside because of that. What's more screen behaves exactly like previous one but rotated by 180deg.

And of course somebody can tell this is not an issue (again S. Jobs comes to my mind with holding phone wrong; going this direction you could wear this watch upside down. Problem solved). But in this regard Garmin spoiled what was good in previous generation and I don't think resolution is related to this problem. This way you could be happy with worse screen quality in Fenix 6: https://youtu.be/s1MEQWRsr-o?t=80 How many of you would like to have watch on the right side? Come on, screen is readable without any problem.

And with Instinct, if you would have choice would you stay with current display (if every watch has this issue) or rather change for effect you get in Instinct 1?

OK, that;s enough for today, there is really small hope new watch will be better in this regard, or I'll try to convince myself that this is special tactical feature, which we received for free ;)

  • Thanks for the pics, quality content taking a dump and checking Kyiv time. ;)

Although I have to agree that the issue is by far more annoying and noticeable in dark environments with backlight on (see my bike footage), your pics highlight the issue still noticeable in other situations.

Before that certain person comes; YES I have the same watch and NO the issue is not exaggerated/strengthened by the camera lens. This is how it looks for me in real life as well. Using my eyes.

  • As mentioned previously; it would not surprise me if the accidentally installed the lens upside down, explaining both the domed glass as well as the inverted polarization (although gotta admit I don't know if it would cause the polarization to turn).

PS: The video you linked further strengthens my suspicion that Garmin has crappy quality control, allowing inferior displays/manufacturing errors. I will watch and see if they fix the display in future GI2 devices and then exchange it.

  • DevilFrog, would you be able to take one or two exactly the same photos (the same light, angle, reflections and toilet paper) but watch put upside down (12 o'clock at the bottom)? This way it would be much easier to see how much visibility is affected by reflections and how it would look like if screen would be constructed like in Instinct 1.
