Seems like a really dumb decision. It's hardly a curve but just enough to stop protectors from being used. I'm sure people want to protect this expensive watch glass. It is not user replaceable. Cannot…
Has nothing to do with this thread because the Solar version has a different glass.
Isn't the title of this thread, "Has anyone confirmed a properly fitting screen protector for the 45mm instinct…
I am quite baffled by Garmin's decision to opt for a convex screen for obviously design reasons. Samsung did this a while with their Edge-line.
Known drawbacks of curved screens are:
- They crack a bit easier due to unequal force distribution on impact.
- Current screen protectors don't fit, but more importantly custom ones again are slightly less robust.
- Reflections are a bit distorted, which makes it harder for our brain to filter them out.
Seems like a really dumb decision. It's hardly a curve but just enough to stop protectors from being used. I'm sure people want to protect this expensive watch glass. It is not user replaceable. Cannot get the parts and it's glued on. Garmin of course say you just need to buy a new watch.
Can Garmin explain why they have gone for this curved glass? They always said not to use a protector as it stops solar charging but it does still charge fine via the sun. Who cares about a few percent loss. You have much more of a loss when the screen cracks as you will need a new watch.
If it's a load stronger than OK makes some sense.
Does the non solar have the same problem?
Garmin support told me both are flat but that seems false based on many photos and videos etc.
Garmin are so quiet on these new features/changes. I asked for a bit more info on the HR sensor and I got told there is none. All I can find online from Garmin is info about the 1st gen elevate sensor.
No transparency, they don't even list it as domed in the specs. I know it's not a big dome at all but it is technically domed unlike most smart watches.
I'm with you, I'll take a small hit on solar charging to keep scratches off the screen, or risking other types of damage. I'll likely be returning mine.
Yeah just tried fitting my usual protectors and realised the screens curved :-(
As far as curved screens go, Suunto used them on the X-landers for years and with less protection and I never had any such damage. And that was old school and less advanced mineral glass because more advanced formulations that more intelligently resist scratching and breaking were not available.
I'm using a mobile outfitters screen protector
the screen doesnt need protector since it is itself scrash-proof
You must use a peotective film, not h9 glass because the the glass is convex. I had the smartwatch from one week and I have scratched the screen....the glass is very delicate, scratches easily and I strongly doubt the advertised military resistance.
Therefore screen protector is highly recommended
Tested it by myself, worked perfectly. Here's info: forums.garmin.com/.../garmin-instinct-2---first-impressions
