Tiny font size Instinct 2s, widget glance almost unreadable. Returning it...

Hi,

any of you owning an Instinct 2s? The small bad quality display combined with this tiny font size makes it almost unreadable.

I knew about the bad display quality and this is not a big deal but why do they use widget glances with such a bad display? The widget glances are very hard to read if you are not 20 anymore. Very hard to unreadable. Why not give us an option to use single widget view? I can read the detailed widgets but not those widget glances. And menu is also small but at least somehow readable because of the black font on white background.

I love the watch, it is so light and small, I always wanted a 40mm sports watch, it combines almost all F7 features. But those tiny fonts are so annoying. The Venu 2s has tiny font size and many complain, but the display is of great quality which makes it better to read. But this is not the case here. And I don't know if it is the display itself or the tiny fonts which makes me need to set the brightness at 50-70% to somehow read anything on the wtach. Never had that before on any Garmin watch. With my Fenix 6s I have it set to 20% like with almost any Garmin watch.

I have to return it unfortunately.

  • I was fearing the fonts being too small on the Instinct 2. With the Instinct 1, the display resolution was just too low to try this. With the new model, the resolution has been upped, so Garmin thought they could and should squeeze more information onto the display. For my (once better) eyesight, the Instinct Solar 1 is just about readable, although in the dark barely.

The black and white MIP-LC-display, though, on the whole is very good in my opinion, at least on the Instinct Solar 1. It's the crispest display I know, as it doesn't use any colour filters, and only one watch from Casio offers similar quality in white-on-black. Of course, a self-lit AMOLED display will always look better and be more readable in the same size.

(The other watch, GBD-H1000, is quite interesting, with heart-rate, GPS, baro/alti, thermo, 12 mon battery life w solar charging (w/o HR), VO2max - HOWEVER, it's huge, 63×55×20.4mm, and weighs a ton, 101g. So the Instinct is FAR slicker and also has MUCH more training and navigation functionality.)

Yeah, that is Garmin's problem. The same with Venu 2s. A better resolution, so just make font smaller and more info. But sorry, I tried the watch more because I love the Instinct 2s and wanted to keep it. It is so small and light and for the first time I have no rash or pressure on my skin or wrist. Combined with my Nick Mankey band it is perfect. Yes, it doesn't look as sleek as my Fenix 6s Pro. But it fits perfectly on my wrist and and really fits me perfectly in my needs. But sorry, I need to read information from time to time on my watch as I am often on the go. And this is a no-go. My eyesight isn't the best anymore either but I can read smaller text quite well for a short time. But the combination of the display with the tiny font size and reflections of glass is terrible to read, esp on dark background, a bit better on light background, but you can't choose the background in system preferences. I can't read anything on the sleep widget f.e. in many situations, would need high brightness compared to other watches.

Disappointing. Why did they do that. I owned the Instinct 1 for a very short time and it was perfectly readable. Because font size was much bigger. Yes, not as nice to look at like the Fenix line but perfectly readable. And yes the 2s screen is smaller but not by THAT much, it really is the size of the font combined with higher resolution. It also feels from what I can remember that the display shows more reflections imo. But maybe this was the case in Instinct 1 too. Fact is Instinct 1 was not so nice because of big fonts and low resolution but it was very good to read. Feels like they just squeezed the Fenix widget size in the smaller display with smaller resolution of the Instinct 2 line.

If it would have been a 200$ watch, ok. Just use it as a band and look at the app. But 350-500$? No thx.

Really disappointed, haven't felt the watch on my wrist, it is that light and small. Really love it for every day use. But no....

And the thing I don't understand on any Garmin watch now is why they don't give us an option anymore to choose between single widget view and widget glances. What is the problem of giving us a choice like on the Fenix 6 series?

  • Wait, they *abandoned* the single widget view? They took something *away* that the Instinct 1 had? OMG, that means I will *never* get the Instinct 2, because quickly scrolling through the *very* readable single widgets is part of my core Instinct experience. Did I understand you correctly?

Yeah, they got rid of it from every newly released watch. No option to choose anymore, I don't get it why. I love the single view widget.

But of course you can get into the widget itself by clicking the widget in the widget glances view. Of course you still have single widget view but with one more step, you need to click the widget in glances first, then you get more information. Like when you click a widget to get to the app on a phone. When before you had an overview of a single widget and click to get even more info, you need to click the small widget glance widget to get into the real widget. But that is one more step. And the font size is tiny as hell in the widget itself, hard to read there.

At least give us an option Garmin. I always disable widget glances on my F6sP.

  • Once you've clicked through to the single widget view, what do the up and down buttons do?
Any chance they move up and down the widget loop in single view?

I already have reseted the watch to sent it back. But when you click the widget  in widget glances you come to the widgets app of a single widget and there you scroll through the widget app itself with different views like recovery, training status view etc in one widget. I believe like a loop within the single widget, but I am not sure if you get to the first view again when at the last. But you can't get from one widget to another in the detailed views. Only from glances... You have to press the back button to get back to widget glances and then enter again to get to another widget...

What a step backwards in usability.

Totally. I don't know why every reviewer loves this widget glances in their reviews since introduction in F6 series around a year ago. But at least there you still have the option to choose. Single view is very readable there. Only with Amoled it makes sense as these displays have high quality, resolution and much more colors and amazing contrast. Not with MIP and Transreflective displays.

Garmin don't seem to put much effort into accessibility, which is surprising in this day and age. At 50+ I need glasses for reading, but my distance vision is fine and therefore I don't wear my glasses for any activities, nor should I need to. However, reading anything on my Instinct, MARQ or Edge is really a struggle and it's really infuriating when a message pops up on my Edge not knowing if it's something critical like my rear light has just died, or just some nice-to-know information. Given that 80% of people will start to suffer from presbyopia in their 40s, I think Garmin are neglecting a large chunk of their buyers, but I guess most of the designers are still at the age where they don't think it'll ever affect them. Of course everyone doesn't want massive fonts, but options (such as font/message sizing) to accommodate those who do is long overdue. And that's not even considering the needs of those with more serious vision issues.

  • There should be options in the settings, so users can accommodate according their needs.
