Users with Fenix 7 > 17.28 + inReach Mini 2: Do you have "Mapshare" in the contacts on your Fenix?

Hi Folks,

@Garmin:
Please do not move this post to the inReach Mini 2 Forum, since this question is about inReach remote implementation on a Fenix 7 and I assume I will reach many more Fenix 7 users here then over in the other forum. Thx.

TL;DR:
Can someone with a Fenix 7 on a firmware > 17.28 used as remote for an inReach Mini 2 check if when writing a custom message (so not one of the three predefined checkin messages) via the Fenix you can select "Mapshare" from the contacts list?
Do you see this entry?
If yes, which firmware version are you running?

--------------------------

For the long version, please refer to my earlier post regarding this topic, which was moved to the inReach Mini 2 forum but there I don't get any reaction:
forums.garmin.com/.../fenix-7x-pro-inreach-mini-2---sending-custom-message-to-mapshare-from-watch-via-inreach-widget

For the three predefined checkin messages you specify the recipients in your inReach account settings, but for custom messages you specify them when writing the message.
In the Garmin Messenger app on my phone and on the inReach Mini 2 itself I have an entry "Mapshare" in the contacts list, so that I can send a message e.g. to someones cellphone or email address but also to my Mapshare so that the message appears on the map.
On my Fenix 7X Pro I don't see Mapshare in the contacts list.
I try to fond out how to resolve this problem and wonder if it's related to the relatively low (but stable) firmware version my Fenix is running which is 17.28.

Best regards,
Thomas

  • I have the 47 mm Fenix 7. Not the Pro. I have software version 23.18. I tried what you asked. I connected my inReach Mini 2. When I get to the screen on the watch that shows "New Message" and select it, I get a screen showing Select Contacts, Type Message, and Pick Quick Text. When I elect Select Contacts the watch reboots. I've tried this several times and got the same result each time. I have a backpacking trip set for next week. I've been going back and forth about getting an Apple Ultra 3. It's gotten to the point where I just can't trust my Fenix. I'm getting tired of the bugs with this device. Heading to the Apple Store this afternoon. I'm glad I came across your post because I didn't know I had this issue. Thanks and good luck with yours.

  • That's really a pain and exactly the reason, why I'm still on 17.28

I'm constantly watching all reports for every new firmware and I was hoping for a new stable release as some others here do, but so far also 23.18 seems to be full of issues.

Sadly you found another one now but thanks for trying it out! Perhaps someone else with a firmware between 17.28 and 23.18 can try this without a reboot.

Also someone from Garmin could simply raise this question to the corresponding engineering team instead of the community finding this out.

  • Hi perhaps this is something you could forward to the engineering team taking care of the remote control features in a Fenix 7 for controlling an inReach Mini 2 device.
Since the explained functionality (sending a custom message to multiple contacts and specificall include "Mapshare" as contact so that the message appears in Mapshare as well") works fine if you do this directly on the inReach Mini 2 and it also works if you do this in the Garmin Messenger app so I guess the missing Mapshare entry in the contacts is an issue specifically in the remote implementation on the Fenix 7.

I would be interested to know if this is supported in a higher firmware than 17.28 or if it would also be possible for me to manually add a contact to my contacts list which achieves the same.

  • Only FYI, some fixes regard InReach in the latest 23.22beta

    • Fix an issue where the device could not cancel an InReach (IR) SOS message.
    • Fix an issue where InReach (IR) SOS messages would sometimes be divided amongst several threads.
  • Got in touch with Garmin about it. They asked for a video which I provided. Then they asked that I upload info from the watch to them. Did that today and will wait and see what I hear. Will post back here with results.

  • Hi and thanks,

that shows that there's something happening on the inReach side for the Fenix 7 but it doesn't refer to Mapshare not being available in the contacts.

I'll get in touch with Garmin Laurie directly and ask her, if she can take this to the engineers of if I have to open a support ticket.

    Best regards,
    Thomas

  • 23.28b - forums.garmin.com/.../beta-version-23-28---now-available-ota-over-the-air---phased-rollout

    • Fixed an issue where InReach (IR) messages would sometimes not be delivered when sending to multiple contacts.
  • Thanks for the info, but this is not about the issue I reported.

  • I'm surprised by all the InReach fixes pushed to F7, when Beta Bug Reports are not dealing with this feature. So i expect a positivie side effect for this thread ... :-(

  • In principle you're right, perhaps I triggered something with my question?

The current problem with Garmin is, even if these bug fixes make it to the next release version, I would not immediately install it since I'm one of these guys who stays on 17.28 since quite a long time now since every new "stable" firmware introduces a lot of new issues and doesn't fix some others that already exist for a long time.

I need a working device and currently my watch simply works for everything I do without any issues. I would highly appreciate if I could back to trusting Garmins software releases but currently I would not install a new firmware just for seeing, if some small issue got solved coincidentally.

Anyways thanks for the info, it would be great to get some response from one of the Garmin support people here in this thread but currently there's just utter silence.
