Cannot add cities to Garmin Weather widget

When I initially set up my Fenix 7S Pro (~10 days ago) I managed to add several cities to the weather widget, thereby allowing me to keep an eye on the weather at these places (e.g where my family lives).
The process is usually : Weather widget > Start button > Add position > Cities > Search by name > Select.

Yesterday I tried adding another one but the process is now failing and feels buggy. What happens is
I go Weather widget > Start button > Add position > Cities, as usual, except now the watch is by default loading results for the 'around me' search option. This takes a while (maybe 20s). If I try to interrupt it, either by pressing back or by selecting another search mode (e.g 'search by name') the watch completely freezes for arond seconds. I can't remember if this behavior changed since last time I set it up but I feel like it should wait for my choice of search mode before assuming I'd want to search a location around my position.
But anyway : when I can finally enter the 'search by name' menu and enter the name of the city I want to add, the watch starts the search animation for about 30 seconds and eventually crashes back to my watchface.

I did a factory reset with backup restoration yesterday evening, following this issue. Not only did it not fix the issue but it also did not restore my saved locations, which I can't seem to add back due to this issue.

What changed since the initial set up, which are my two main suspects : Firmware update to 22.06, and also installed a custom map optimized for hiking in addition to TopoActive, called MapRando.
There is a decent chance that the issue comes from my custom map, because when I go to the 'nearby' search mode and select 'select on map' (I'm translating these menu options from french, I don't know their exact names on the english locale) it uses my custom map instead of TopoActive. Therefore it seems likely that it might also be using MapRando for search results as well.

If such is the case, the issue is that there is no way to configure maps for the weather widget in the same way I can disable MapRando in favor of TopoActive for certain activity profiles. This custom map is otherwise quite useful and I'd rather not have to remove it because of this. Although in last resort I suppose it would be possible to remove the map > set up the weather widget > reinstall the map.

Then of course there is the possibility of the issue coming from update 22.06. Is anyone else experiencing the issue ?

Cheers,

  • I'm on 18.16 and the only option in the native weather glance I have is "Update Current Location"... are you potentially using a CIQ weather glance that provides support for multiple locations?

  • No I'm definitely talking about the native Garmin Weather glance / widget (not sure about the difference, the glance is when you just look at it as a single row info item, and then you open it and that's the widget ?)

I don't know if that is a new feature, nor how far back is 18.16 compared to 22.06, but for me, if I get to the "Update current location" button I'm already too far into the menus.
I open up the widget, press START on the weather home page  and there I get one of two choices by default : Add position, and "weather settings". Inside weather settings is the "update current location" and other settings such as units etc...

By anyway, I tested it out and it seems my issue comes from the MapRando custom map. For whatever reason it seems to be taking precedence over TopoActive and I guess the dominant map data is used as location database for the weather widget. I removed the map, set up my weather locations without failure, and reinstalled the map. It would be a bit easier if I could choose the map I want to use for location searching.
In fact I did eventually find a map settings inside the weather widget (down on the last screen that can display weather map animations > START > Map > Configure maps > Disable MapRando). But even so, searching for a city still crashes if the map is merely installed.

This is quite messy because it turns out that this particular weather map animation view actually shows TopoActive, not my custom map, even if the latter is enabled. Yet it seems to be using MapRando for searching regardless...

At last I was able to add 4 cities, on top of the "current position" location (so 5 locations in total, 4 of which are static) and that seems to be the limit as the "Add position" menu button is now gone.

  • Huh, I learned something new today. Hadn't discovered that feature on my F7 yet.
Seems like you figured out your issue is related to the custom map. I don't have any custom maps installed, so unfortunately I can't test if this issue existed on 18.16 as well.
