15.77 vs 17.28

Hi all. What are the pros and cons of the firmware 15.77 versus 17.28. Now I have 17.28 and having spent 2 weeks in the mountains collided with two unexpected reboots of the watch (before that half a year has never happened). This did not lead to any loss of data, but still ... The second is not a very pleasant feature - when choosing a movement to the beginning, periodically on the map, the arrows of the movement disappear. Then they appear. I did not find out the pattern. Otherwise, there were no special problems. Another question - does the double -click of the Light button work to turn on the fanarik? Thank you

You mean the flashlight? It does. One of my favourite features. With some of the CIQ-WFs (not with all and not with stock WFs) it lags a little with 15.77 - that was a known problem, but it works even than.

I don't think that you will be w/o any reboots even on 15.77 but I can't remember the last time. Which is good.

the arrows of the movement disappear

I didn't observe that either (and can't remember that bug when I was still using TopoActive Maps on 15.77) but now on the live unit on 15.77 I use 3rd party maps which in my case are more but smaller (country level, sometimes even region level) and this might have an effect on crashes as well as on other unwanted reactions. It's also way faster when the map is smaller.

  • You mean the flashlight? It does.

I mean precisely the quick control of the flashlight for a quick double press. It seems they wrote that it was introduced in subsequent firmware. I could be mistaken.

but now on the live unit on 15.77 I use 3rd party maps

I also use third -party cards. Maybe of course the problem, although I doubt it

  • Maybe of course the problem

With my Tactix7pro it was. The WFs from ManuelB I use https://apps.garmin.com/de-DE/developer/6436a326-9f3d-4e5d-a6c6-2ec8550bd37b/apps e.g. work flawless. There was a problem when the CIQ version used in 15.77 was new b/o a lot of changes were made as he explained to me back then but he fixed it very fast and there has never been a problem since. Also no problem with Glance Pro and the stock faces.

precisely the quick control of the flashlight for a quick double press

Exactly, otherwise it would be a big nuisance for me too, I use it multiple times a day.

  • I dont like the double click thing...if I want to quickly see the face and its dark and press on and off too quick, it starts flashing :P

  • Not with my units on 15.77(live) and 22.06(Test). I tried as fast as I could and light turns on immediately and steady. Maybe you can set somewhere which behavior the light button has? Don't know that but I want it steady anyway.

  • Sorry, yes it's steady - but I still dont want it haha. no way to turn it off either, i just need to slow down my clicks if i just want to see the time quickly

  • You can turn it off by just double clicking again. Works every time with me on both systems.

To just light the screen you have to click only once so no LED torch is firing. Or you could touch the screen if enabled.

  • Yes, but I mean if i want to check the time at night say, i click once to show the screen, see the time, then click once to turn the backlight off. the problem with those 2 clicks so close activates the flashlight - thats what i want to turn off Stuck out tongue

  • I was on 15.77 from November to June, then installed 21.19, and then went back to 17.28 last week.

15.77 was completely stable for me but 17.28 has been as well for the past five days. I'm seeing battery usage of about 4-4.5 percent for 17.28 while I saw 6-7 percent for 21.19. Better than intermediate releases though. I think that 15.77 has worse battery life than 17.28.

So I'm on 17.28 for a while until Garmin can put out a new release with comparable battery life that's also stable.

You could look at the release for the 18.* betas to see what was fixed to get an idea as to what was broken. I suspect that people have preferences based on what features they use.

I'm not sure what you mean by fanarik.

  • Thx for this insight. Think I'll try 17.28 on my test system next and compare it against 15.77. Battery life is always an important factor.
