Has anyone had any issues with fenix 7 not recording running distance correctly?

I ran London marathon in April and my watch was over 2 miles out (extra) on the course. I put it down to gps around canary wharf. However since then none of my runs have recorded correctly. They have always been more than the distance I have run. I did a soft reset and hoped this would cure it but when my runs upload to strava it also looks like I am veering all over the road with zigzag lines. Any suggestions of what to do?

Generally, running in an urban jungle like London's downtown is challenging for GPS devices, and running in a big crowd of people also adds up to weakening the signal. You should chose the highest available GPS accuracy option (all sats + multiband, every second recording), if you do not do it already. Also make sure to turn on the GPS a few minutes before the start, in order to "soak" the GPS signal (locking more satellites, and adjusting the trigonometric algorithms to the best constellation, to maximize the accuracy)

If your watch already does use the most accurate option, then I'd recommend using an external HRM with built-in accelerometer like the HRM-Pro, HRM-Fit, or HRM 600 - those can improve the accuracy under bad GPS conditions considerably (in my case the margin of error dropped from up to 10% to less than 1% when I started to use HRM-Pro), once it is properly calibrated.

The internal accelerometer of the watch is also used at weak GPS signal, but cannot be easily recalibrated, so if your initial runs were already done under bad conditions, the calibration may be pretty much off. The only way to fix it, is by resetting the watch to factory defaults, and then doing a few runs under excellent GPS condition (open space, no vegetation, no crowds, good weather). With the external HRM it is easier, since the calibration can be halted or reset anytime easily.

  • Tbh Its normally really accurate and I wouldnt want to buy/use anything as well for that purpose. The watch was more than enough. Its since London it isn't accurate anymore and I can't understand what's changed

  • Probably the accelerometer calibration was disturbed by the late start of the GPS, possibly without fresh ephemeris data, and bad conditions (urban jungle, many human bodies in close proximity,...). Either do a few runs under good GPS conditions, after having updated the watch over the USB cable from Garmin Express (to assure getting the latest ephemeris data), adjust the GPS settings if necessary. Or, if that does not help, then reset the watch to factory defaults, and let it calibrate the accelerometer anew - that may be a bit faster.

  • Thanks. Ive been using it since April and don't live in London so its had plenty of good gps signal runs...or the opportunity to have good signal and its still been out. It uploads to garmin and it looks like I am drunk running as the lines it records are wavy. I have also done a soft reset. Dont fancy a hard reset as Ill lose everything that I have recorded as far as I know? Ill try and see if I can get hold of a laptop and use the USB to update. Thanks again

  • No, you will not lose anything, except of the settings, and customization of menus and options. All data is stored on Garmin's servers in the Garmin Connect database. Unless you have completely disabled the data upload.

  • Thank you again. Maybe thats the way to go then. Ill let you know.

  • What software are you on ? There were some MAJOR issues with recent software- 22.06 seems to be working better

  • Where do I find this please? It says software up dates auto and its all up to date
