Mess with data after 21.19

Yesterday I did indoor ride with my Garmin Edge 1040. My primary device it Fenix 7x. During ride I didn't wear watch. After syncing data, my watch shows
completely wrong active calories, I'm doing such rides from some time and never had such issue before 21.19 BTW.  I'm not wearing watch during indoor rides when I recording
on my Edge device because when I do this calories do not synch to my watch (other issue). I was not analyzing this in details but looks like other metrics are also not correct.

Garmin so many years and such mess with data sync between devices, this is one of examples when people complains about lack of new features for older devices and in the same time
i only wish that my device work correctly with existing ones as this is only one example from so many.

  • Few days ago I ride outside and after sync everything was ok, yesterday indoor ride and again some strange things happened. Firstly active calories where 50% to high according to activity and then after some time went down below calories from activity. Someone any idea what is going on ? I checked Garmin connect on my phone and it was also not correct.

Active Calories get first synced from your Edge, and then are overwritten from the Primary Wearable Device (Fenix), unless the Edge is set as the Primary Training Device. In that case the Calories from Edge (usually more accurate) should prevail. Assuming you have the latest firmware on both devices.

  • Yes firmware is up to date (latest one) on both devices. And now when I thinking about this and about what you said, looks like firstly Edge delivered invalid calories and then watch that I was not wearing during ride recalculated this data probably based on HR instead of power. Calories are much lower then should be and I have quite low HR for power output. I'm not  sure where issue is as Edge was also updated recently but both things are not right (calories delivered by Edge and then recalculation done by Fenix). Other thing is that calculations done on both devices should be identical as data that is synced contains all metrics.

Not really, unless you connect all sensors (HRM, power meter, speed sensor) to the watch and start an activity on it too. Otherwise, the data from Edge, using the HRM strap and power should be definitely more accurate, but will be used only if Edge is set as the Primary Training Device. By default it is the watch that is set both as Primary Wearable Device and Primary Training Device, so make sure you change that, if you did not yet.

  • But man what accuracy, I'm talking here about completely invalid data. Please look at original example, also yesterday activity active calories 2100 and my watch displayed in summary something like 3500 and then after some time it was updated to 1700. Don't understand what you mean about more accurate data when sensors are directly connected to device. FIT file contains power and HR data recorded every second so when other device recalculate it can use that data. Both devices support  physio true up what means that data should be the same and accurate ? on all devices. My primary device is Fenix and I don't want to change that, also as I mentioned when I was recording ride outside data was synced correctly, so maybe something is going on with indoor stuff and this was working fine some time ago.

  • Don't understand what you mean about more accurate data when sensors are directly connected to device. FIT file contains power and HR data recorded every second so when other device recalculate it can use that data

Each device calculates the Calories with its own data, in real time, so if you do not connect the sensors to the watch, and do not start any activity, the watch stays in low-power mode, and calculates the Calories only using the wrist HR, and no power. Physio TrueUp only serves to share the resulting data, where the ones from the preferred or active device will override the data from the other one, and it has no impact on the data processing.

As for the resulting Calories from Edge - I suspect some problem in the input data. For example incorrectly set body parameters, or wrongly calibrated power meter. If you find nothing, I recommend contacting the Support, sending them the activity FIT file, and asking them to investigate.

  • Ok. So it was my missunderstanding that it's recalculated after sync. But in this case it also make no sense as I was not wearing watch during ride i also checked hr data on my watch after calories were updated to lower value and in that period there was no hr data. Data from activity looks correct, issue is with calories summary and probably also with other overal metrics.  Something strange going on here ..

There is an ongoing existing thread here: https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/331557/active-calories-not-counted/1942895#1942895 The problem has affected all EDGE devices which are UTS enabled.

I have recently followed the current advice from Garmin which states that the EDGE should be used as the PTD. I now have a Fenix 8 as PW and EDGE 1050 as PTD. I record rides on the EDGE and continue to wear the F8 passively during the activity. This new configuration seems to work correctly as shown in the linked thread,
If you wish to have your watch as both PW and PTD, i have had similar success whilst wearing the F8 by recording any dummy GPS activity on the watch and deleting it afterwards. I wouldn't recommend the walking activity though as you get left with an unfeasibly large number of stairs climbed since they don't get deleted when you delete the activity.

For the moment though I'm happy with F8 as PW and Edge as PTD it works for calories and has no detrimental effect on other data.
