What are the exact steps to backdate firmware

What are the actual steps to backdate the firmware on Fenix 7? Everyone says put the files in the Garmin folder but where do I find that? Is there a folder specific for the watch? All I have found so far is C:/programdata/garmin/ Then there are two folders CoreServices and Express. Is this the right folder? Do I put the files in one these sub directories? Then what do you do? Any help would be appreciated.

I have to say I am about done with Garmin. I had auto update off on my watch and Garmin express still updated the firmware, All I wanted to do was update my maps and that is the only thing I clicked on. Very frustrating.

Garmin should stop putting out new watches until they fix their current firmware issues.

  • All I have found so far is C:/programdata/garmin

It appears that you're browsing your computer files rather than the files on the watch.

On my Windows machine with epix connected - This PC\EPIX\Internal Storage\GARMIN

When you download the zip file then unzip it you'll see how to backdate in the file named "Backdating software - Read Me.txt"

    Essentially:

To backdate: install the "force.tmp" file to the Garmin folder, along with the gupdate.gsp file for the software you want to revert to. Then unplug and install. Your watch will backdate to whatever version you loaded. Backdating software will revert your watch to factory default.

  • Thank you for the reply. Here is what the read me file says:

To backdate: install the "force.tmp" file to the Garmin folder, along with the gupdate.gsp file for the software you want to revert to.
Then unplug and install. Your watch will backdate to whatever version you loaded. Backdating software will revert your watch to factory default.

So is the "Garmin folder" on the watch our on my computer?

    Thanks for the help

  • So is the "Garmin folder" on the watch our on my computer?

It's on your watch, but you view it using File Explorer on your computer. Are you on Windows or Mac?

On my Windows machine it shows up as EPIX, because I have an Epix (Gen 2)

    • It would say "Fenix" in your case.
    • From there click on Fenix >> Internal Storage >> Garmin

    • Then you can copy the files force.tmp and gupdate.gsp into the Garmin folder.
    • Once you've done that and the 2 files exist in that Garmin folder, unplug the watch from the computer.
    • When the watch comes back up, you'll be prompted to install 20.22, or whatever firmware you've downloaded.
  • Excellent. I think I get it now. So basically connect the watch to my PC and using Explorer up load the files to the watch. It is too bad the read me file isn't a little clearer. Thanks again for the help.

I may wait and see what the next update does, but I am 20.22 is draining my battery even after a couple of reboots. I really wish Garmin would get their act together with it's firmware. I also wish they would make all the old firmware readily available.

  • So I have tried several times to backdate my firmware and all that seems to happen is that it deletes gupdate.gsp file. Please help. Thanks.

  • Quick update. I had the wrong file. I have been able to backdate. So far all is well. Thanks again for the help.
