Dynamic Source Switching Feature Doesn't Work as Advertised --- MAJOR BUG

After the last two software updates now at v20.22 my watch's OHR stays on during an activity (draining the battery even more of course) even when I have Dynamic Source Switching OFF. You have to keep the Heart Rate Status set to Auto or you will not get OHR at all even outside an activity. As per Garmin's Support pages https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Nf8r6ApX4d9lX0G0flEsVA&productID=735573&searchQuery=heart%20rate%20dynamic and here https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/GUID-5D183A14-BB43-4A9B-B441-5F824214CE40/EN-US/GUID-CEE01C08-4EAD-4EF2-AF52-8033A9695572.html, once a external strap is detected the OHR should turn off if the DSS is disabled. IT DOES NOT. I've tried various configurations and the OHR stays on regardless. This is definitely a bug. This used to be an issue when they first rolled it out last year and I had the same issue. Then after spending countless hours on support chat over weeks, low and behold an update came out and it was fixed. You could turn it ON/OFF at will and once the HRM strap was detected the OHR would cut off during an activity just like it originally did before Garmin got in there and started "updating" stuff.

And now here we are again... same issue another year. And to note, I don't even have a paired HRM that would be compatible. I have and HRM-Run and that doesn't even used DSS. So basically I've got DSS feature running my battery down (an extra 5% per day) on activities using and HRM strap for less than an hour because the OHR cannot be deactivated,  that's ridiculous. This is just Garmin's way of forcing you to upgrade by prematurely depleting your battery because they thought no one would notice OR they just have some very incompetent developers that don't have a clue what they're doing. Either way... it needs to be fixed ASAP .

Note: I've already done the resets, and all the other setting switchery.

  • I suggest reporting it to the Support, and in the time being, while waiting for the fix (may be long), use the Jacket Power Mode in the concerned activity profile. If you use to do the activity both with and without the strap, create a copy of the activity profile, keeping one without any Power Mode (HR sensor on), and another one with the Jacket Power Mode (HR sensor disabled).

  • A few flashing LEDs for an hour cannot be responsible for 'an extra 5% per day', as described in the support pages that you reference. They also say "Some sensor lights may flash after the wrist-based heart rate monitor is turned off".
