How come my HR reading was so delayed?

You can see in the chart my pace is rather consistent which is pushing it but also not all-out effort. It seems to register an obvious jump at the very beginning, but then 10+ minutes to register what I believe is the more accurate HR?

fenix 7s. It was cold out. Short sleeve no gloves. I had it strapped tight

  • Look up the term "cadence lock" here on the forum, on Garmin's Support website, or elsewhere on the web.

Long sleeves, gloves, warm-up, tighter wristband fit, position well above the wrist bone,... may mitigate the cadence lock, but the best way to avoid it, is using a HRM chest strap.

  • It seems NOT a cadence lock issue?

Cadence lock typically locks much higher, no? Also it didn’t actually match my cadence…

  • Also it didn’t actually match my cadence…

It does not necessarily do. The optical sensor locks on the interference of the wave caused by cadence, and the one from the heart. The cadence does not replace the HR. Both signals combine together, and the result is not easily predictable. Besides the interference, also the noise suppressing algorithms may cause another shift of the rate.
