No Contacts in Messenger App on Fenix 7

Hi there, 

when trying to send a message from the Fenix 7's Messenger App (19.41, connected to iPhone running iOS 18.2 with the Messenger App being on 2.2.1) I do get the following error on the watch when selecting New Message:

Add contacts in the Garmin Messenger app.

I do have contacts in the Garmin Messenger app and I can send messages to the using a connected inReach Mini 2. Fuethermore I do see the existing conversations on the watch but only the phone numbers of the conversation, so it appears that the watch indeed is missing the contact context. 

Am I missing a crucial step? Do I need to store contacts anywhere else in the app to make them visible?

  • I am sorry to hear you are having this issue. I have not been able to reproduce this concern. So for this, I have some additional questions. 

    • The contacts you have added, are they InReach contacts? Or phone numbers you have added? 
    • If you try adding a contact with a phone number, does this then appear in the watch? 

    I would also ensure the phone OS is on the latest software version. 

  • I am getting the same thing on a Fenix 8. I have contacts setup in the messenger app on my phone. But when I click send new message from the watch, I get that message too. Also on the watch, it shows the messages that are already in the app but just showing their phone number and not the name of the sender. Have rebooted, resynced, etc. and still getting it. 

  • Okay…so, I deleted the messenger app and all the data. Added it again and the UI was completely different. lol. Even though all my apps were updated I guess this was not??? Now I can see the names of the senders but when I send a message, there are about there contacts in my list vs the 10 I have. Is this correct??

    thank you for having a look into this. 

    I did add the contacts to the Garmin iOS Messenger app by selecting the inReach Mini 2 device in the app and then selecting Contacts. I can see the names of the contacts I added and the phone numbers associated with them. Some have email addresses or inReach addresses added as well. 

    None of them appear on the watch when I select New Message, all oh them appear on the inReach Minii 2. 

    Everything should be updated to the latest software and firmware versions.

  •  Were you able to resolve this? I'm encountering the exact same problem, except with a FR 955 Solar and the Android Messenger app.

  • I spoke with support who informed me that "New Message" in the Messenger glance only shows contacts that have the Messenger app installed on their phone. None of my contacts had the Messenger app. I asked one of them to install the Messenger app and they showed up in my contact list on my watch afterwards.
