Intermittent Data Capture

I ran yesterday and my Fenix 7 captured the first 2 minutes' data then recorded me as "idle" for 5 minutes then recorded the rest of the run.  As a result the distance run was out by more than 1 km, average pacing etc was completely wrong and it invented some garbage heart rate data for the missing 5 minutes.

Any idea what's going on?

  • Any idea what's going on?

None. Did you have GPS lock before you started? Where was your run? Was it in an environment with no overhead cover?

invented some garbage heart rate data

Did you have a heart rate strap connected? If using WHR was the watch in the proper place on the wrist and tight enough?

  • Yes GPS lock was fine at the beginning of the run and the first two minutes were accurately logged.  It stopped logging all data (not only GPS but cadence, ground contact time etc) for 5 minutes whilst I was running on an open road which has never caused a problem with any GPS watch for me over the last 18 years.

I was using an HRM pro strap and the data looked fine before the watch stopped logging the run and after it started again.  In the loss 5 minutes the heart rate data was on a random walk between 73bpm and 149 bpm (unlike pace and all other data which was just blank).

  • Try again and see if it repeats. if it does contact Garmin Support.

  • Hopefully, a one-time thing. During your next runs, try to check the watch every 30 seconds for he first 15 minutes to see if it reboots or returns to the watchface.

If it reboots, you can try to free up space on the storage, delete old activity FIT files (make a backup first). Restart the watch. Consider de-installing any CIQ datafields.

Before contacting Support try a reset to factory defaults without restoring a backup (they will always ask if you tried that).
