Navigation problems can't import routes only option is track

I’ve been having trouble with my Garmin Fenix 7 where routes I send to the watch end up being converted into tracks instead of functioning as routes for navigation. Here’s what I’ve done so far:

1. Route Creation: I plan routes in Komoot (which exports as GPX/Track by default), then import them into Garmin Basecamp. I right-click on the Track in Basecamp and use the “Create Route from Track” option.

2. Waypoints: The route is correctly created in Basecamp, with around 48 waypoints. I verify that it’s recognized as a route in Basecamp.

3. Sending to Watch: When I send the route to my Fenix 7, I make sure to select the correct options (routes, not tracks). The route appears on the watch when connected to the computer as a route.

4. Issue: As soon as I disconnect the watch and start navigation (Mountain Bike Profile > Navigation > Courses), the route is displayed as a track instead, without turn-by-turn directions. It only shows the overall track path without proper zoom or directional guidance.

5. Troubleshooting:

I’m using the same map (OpenMTB) on both the watch and Basecamp, with the same layout and settings (Fenix Layout).

I tested shorter routes (5km with 38 waypoints), but the same issue occurs.

Ensured that “Follow Course” and other relevant settings are correct on the watch.

Please can someone help me with this

    What?

  • What?

hokumto1 is a spammer. Report as abusive if anything seems unusual.

  • The Fenix converts all gpx files to courses. So on the watch, there will be no difference between a track and a route.

Could you describe what you would like to achieve? Is it only about getting turn by turn prompts? Or would you like the watch to calculate the route for you?

Could you describe what you would like to achieve

I would like to receive precise turn-by-turn navigation prompts while riding. Additionally, I want the watch to calculate the best route based on the tours I’ve created using Komoot or Basecamp with the OpenMTB Map.

Currently, I can only follow a track, and if I stray from it, there’s no rerouting—just a notification to turn. The zoom level is also not optimal, and the alerts are insufficient; my current data screen doesn’t highlight important turns adequately. I often find myself glancing at my wrist for navigation, which is frustrating.

On one occasion, when I let the watch navigate to a point, it performed perfectly with calculations, alerts, and rerouting. I want that level of navigation for an entire course or tour. I hope this clarifies my request, and thank you for your assistance!

  • Okay, understood. In this case, the "Follow course" setting is the culprit. When this is selected, the watch blindly follows the course and will not calculate on its own. If the course contains navigation instructions, it will display them. If you get off course, it will only tell you how far you are off, but there is no re-routing.

To get what you want, you need to change the setting to "Use Map". Then the watch should calculate your route based on the loaded course (or selected destination) and the offline map. It will generate the turn by turn instructions based on the map.

Thanks for your reply, that clarifies a lot. I tried switching from “Follow course” to “Use Map” as you suggested, but when I loaded the OpenMTB Map on my watch, it got stuck loading for a very long time, eventually crashed my watch.

I’m not sure if the map is too large or complex for the watch to handle, or if there’s another issue.

Take off the map and use a Garmin map.
