Fenix 7 v18.16 Post Activity Battery Drain with INCIDENT DETECTION ENABLED

 carrying over from forums.garmin.com/.../battery-drain-v18-15

Issue persists.

Yesterday I installed v18.16, charged my watch to 100%, did a soft reset (15 seconds light). Unplugging at 8:50 (yes, local time). I started a running activity with GPS, waited for a fix and then discarded it. 18:00 (again local time, so dT 9:10), my battery is down by 4%, giving a hourly consumption of approx. 0.436% or a projected runtime of 9.54 days *IDLE*. I know battery decrease is not linear, but this is the pattern I started seeing with v18.14.

Furthermore:

  • Garmin share deactivated
  • WHR on
  • PulseOx off
  • Backlight off
  • Gestures for backlight off
  • Touchscreen off
  • Tones off
  • Incident detection indeed on

Will update accordingly after uptime of 12, 24 and 48 hours

  • After 12 h -> down to 95%, 0.416% / h, 10.0 d runtime IDLE
  • After 24 h -> down to 90%, 0.416% / h, 10.0 d runtime IDLE
  • After 36 h -> down to 86%, 0.388% / h, 10.7 d runtime IDLE
  • After 48 h -> down to 84%, interestingly just 0.15% / h in 12 h
  • --- Run Activity 1:15 h, GPS, music, external HR, Stryd, down to 65%
  • --- Following runtimes exclude the running activity, so bare idle runtime
  • After 50 h -> down to 62%, 0.300% / h
  • After 80 h -> down to 56%, 0.300% / h
  • After 93 h -> down to 54%, 0.154% / h
  • After 105 h -> down to 50%, 0.333% / h

*** So somehow it seems that around 36 hours post activity something happens, that lets the consumption rate go back to 0.15% / h ***

Breakdown: Charged to 100% on 04.10. 08:50. Down to 20% on 10.10. 20:00. During this period I tracked 2:15 hours of activity with GPS consuming a total of 30% charge. The remaining 155:10 hours consumed 50% charge, resulting in an average discharge rate of 0.325% / hour or 12.75 days runtime IDLE!

  • How can you disable it? I don't even have that option on my 7? My battery is draining a lot with 18.16 and I'm concerned that swapping it for another 7 won't fix the issue.

  • Hey, details on incident detection setup, turning on and off can be taken from www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-8F7F297D-23C5-4256-8939-16A4D04408C1.html

  • Updated yesterday from 18.15 to 18.16 and unusual battery drain started again WITH INCIDENT DETECTION OFF
    I lost 13% in 24 hours with energy save mode for 8 hours (during sleep time) and a run of 38 minutes.
    the battery drain started actually just after the update even before the run which I did this evening.

    switching device off and on didn’t fix.

    18.16 installed OTA.

    I will try to check for any update with Garmin express, do a soft reset and then full change the watch and let’s see how it goes

    18.15 was working well.

  • So something is definitely fishy.

    ive installed 16 and now when I go I to incident detection on watch I can see each activity status.

    before with 15 I couldn’t as I didn’t have an emergency contact added and it told me to setup via the connect app.

    15 behaviour looks right. With 16 why let me turn it on when there is no emergency contact?

    off to a local park run tomorrow will see what happens re battery

  •  Interestingly, after 36 hours of uptime, the consumption seems to decrease to 0.15% per hour. Can't monitor that state any further, since I will be out running today.

  • I have incident detection on but Garmin Share off.

    I charged the watch 3 days ago, I did 30 mins GPS activity, and 2 strength workouts with Hrm pro and now I'm 79%. Pulso Ox on during night and I'm losing 2% overnight battery saver on.

    Which battery app do you using?

    7x Pro

  • I am not using any CIQ widget for this tracking. After seeing this drainage on 18.14, I factory reset my 7 Sapphire Solar for 18.15 and wanted to minimize possible side effects. Only CIQ content, that is installed is my Stryd CIQ datafield.

    These vales are manually read by the Garmin interface (enabled percentage in powermanager submenu) at the given uptimes and calculated by myself.

  • Ah ok, I have CIQ apps but I had before so I'm not going to remove then. I downgraded from 18.12 to 17.28 full factory reset and thereafter restored from backup. For me it seems 17.28 it was a bit better than 18.16.

    Anyway thanks for the info. I'll wait for the next beta if it is bring anything new.

  • You're welcome, will keep you posted here - also if carrying over to next beta.

  • I'm currently using 18.16 on my F7XSS and I can see that the battery still drains faster than it did in 17.28. It's better than it was in 18.14 (then I got annoyed and unsubscribed from the beta program), but not as good as it was in 17.28. I'm currently using over 4% battery per day in 18.16, while in 17.28 it was around 3% per day for me with identical settings on everything in the watch. I'll be testing it out for a few more days, but I'll probably go back to 17.28.
