Screen automatically & repeatedly changes away from Map view during activity.

I've had this issue off and on with my Fenix 7 for over two years now... most frustratingly when I need to have the map up for course routing.

The issue is the same for Road and Trail running, the map screen would automatically change to the first-most screen over and over, making glances at a map/course impossible, and frankly ruining many of my trail runs.

I thought that if it keeps changing to the first screen from the map, if I rearrange all the screens so the map is the first and default one it may still change screens on its own, but at least it would be to the (now) default map screen (at least for trail runs)..

Was this what happened? Nope!

Now my map view (which is the first and default view) will automatically change to the 3rd or 4th or 5th screen, inconsistently, still causing me to need to press a button multiple times to switch back to the map... now it's just the up button instead of the down button.

I have experimented with disabling the touchscreen except for the map view and turning off the touchscreen completely, neither making a difference in this behavior.
I regularly need to zoom into the map/course because the heading bug and course arrows can be too small to see and too far down on the screen and obstructed by the two data fields I display with the map.

I am also aware of the AutoScroll setting, and it is and has always been set to "Off"

On more than a few occasions, I have been in a dangerous situation because of this bug when I didn't have cell reception/signal or it was raining and unable to interact with my phone, and I was lost and reliant on the map being available on this watch...

  • Have you checked if auto scroll is disabled within the sport activity settings? Most probably it is enabled thus you experience the changes on the screen of your watch.

  • On more than a few occasions, I have been in a dangerous situation because of this bug when I didn't have cell reception/signal or it was raining and unable to interact with my phone, and I was lost and reliant on the map being available on this watch...

Not to detract from any underlying problem you might be experiencing, and trying to make allowances for the often overly dramatic comments posters often make but really, you should not put yourself in a position where your life might depend on a small wrist worn device. Carry a paper map as a fall back.

  • I appreciate your sentiment. Up-to-date paper maps aren't available for my local trail system, and I am a regular contributor to updating OSM based on my own first-hand & GPS tracks.

Also it is important to mention that dangerous does not mean life-threatening, it just means dangerous. I wasn't intending to come across as hyperbolic.

  • I thought I had updated my original post to include that Auto Scroll has always been set to "Off". I have turned it on, seen the effect, and then disabled it again during a test activity... and the map would go away again, jumping down a few screens.

before I made the map my first screen, it used to jump up to the first screen from the map.

Same happens during interval/planned workouts, where it won't stay on the workout screen, but go to what may be the 3rd, 4th, or 5th screen from the top.

  • What about Touch? is enabled or disabled?

  • As my original post already stated, touch has not been a factor.

  • If Auto Scroll is already disabled

    • try disabling
      • ClimbPro
      • and/or Auto Climb

One of this feature always change the screen shown on your device, and i think it's Auto climb, take a look to Mode Switch option and you will find something that could explain why your screen position is override/change during your activity

    • Select Auto Climb > Status.
    • Select Always or When Not Navigating.
    • Select an option:
      • Select Run Screen to identify which data screen appears while running.

      • Select Climb Screen to identify which data screen appears while climbing.

      • Select Invert Colors to reverse the display colors when changing modes.

      • Select Vertical Speed to set the rate of ascent over time.

      • Select Mode Switch to set how quickly the device changes modes.

NOTE: The Current Screen option allows you to automatically switch to the last screen you were viewing before the auto climb transition occurred.
  • In my case I had a black circle on the screen making lots of nonsense. After switching watch off and on the problem went away... it came back once after about 3 month.

  • Maybe the up or down button is defective and triggers without an actual button push? Does one of them (or both) have a different feel when pushed?

To verify, you can try to ctivate the button lock and see if it makes a difference.

  • It turns out the issue with my watch was an "AutoClimb" setting that I didn't know about and it got turned on somehow.
Every time elevation changed, it would go away from the map which explains why it would happen less, but still happen sometimes on the road.

The setting is fixed and I no longer want to remove the watch with a cry for help.
