Voice prompts coming out of phone speaker about upcoming course points even when turn alerts are disabled

This is related to the widely discussed issue about the voice prompts for turns when using navigation that can't be disabled.

The currently recommended workaround is to disable turn alerts on the watch, which stops any kind of turn alerts including beeps and vibration.

However what I observed is that even with turn alerts disabled, there are still voice prompts for upcoming course points. There are two voice prompt per course points - a short distance before when approaching a course point and then another voice prompt right at course point. Just to be clear, this issue applies to custom course points on the course, such as checkpoint, summit, aid station, etc. For example, it would say "Summit in 121 feet" or "Point in 247 feet".

These prompts come out of my phone speaker, and as far as I can tell, there is absolutely no way to disable them unless I turn Bluetooth off on my watch. But disabling Bluetooth would also disable Live Tracking, so that isn't a good solution.

I wanted to mention this as a separate issue so that it doesn't get overlooked.

  • Update August 20, 2024:

Our engineers are aware of an issue causing audio prompts for navigation to sounds, when audio prompts are disabled. This concern has been escalated, to hopefully find a solution for this soon.  The current recommendation, is to disable the Turn Prompts. This will disable the navigation prompts on the watch, but will also disable the audio prompts.

If this does not stop the audio prompts, you can also reduce the phone volume temporarily.

Once there is any software solutions, or additional updates, I will post again.

  • , as I explained above, in my case turn prompts are already disabled. That does prevent audio prompts for turn directions, but that doesn't prevent audio prompts for upcoming course points. My issue is specific to course points. Please read the description carefully!

  • Please read the description carefully!

As I mentioned, since this is a known issue, it is not something we have the ability to stop. I did read that you are still experiencing this with turn prompts off. And mentioned adjusting the volume in the mean time. For many, disabling turn prompts has helped, so I still need to mention this recommendation.

The hope is, we will have a solution that will allow us to disable these entirely. Unfortunately for the time being, if neither the volume or turn prompts is helping, you may need to continue disabling Bluetooth as a workaround, until a solution is found.

  • Ok, I just wanted to make sure that the fix addresses both types of prompts at the same time. If Garmin engineers are unaware that this issue exists for course points as well, they may easily overlook that in their fix.

  • On my epix 2 it's te same. For developers. My setting is audio off voice Fem lan Dutch. output on phone voice Fem lang ENG... maybe this helps

  • escalated to where? This problem is still there after more than 9 months. So, does it mean Garmin ignore this one when it was escalted and no action!!?

  • Update:

Our engineers have since indicated that having audio prompts enabled at all times when navigating, is by design. When navigating, you will hear the navigation audio prompts through the phone, or a paired headset. To disable this, you would want to disable the Turn Prompts through the watch menu: Menu > Navigation > Alerts > Turn Prompts off.

They are aware that not all users are satisfied with this change. So they are adding those to an Experience case to track those hoping for a change to this. I have already added those of you here to that Experience case.

You can also submit your desire for this to change here as well: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

  • , and yet again, as I stated earlier, disabling turn prompts does nothing to disable notifications about course points and approaching end of course.

Please see the title of this post. We've already had this exchange in the past and you are posting the same incorrect workaround again.

But anyway, I've since moved on to another brand that this response reenforces my decision to give up on Garmin. I refuse to pay the kind of money high end Garmin devices cost for the quality of software that they have.

  •  If this is by design, are they saying it took them YEARS to “fix” it?

Why on earth should users have to submit a “feature request” for audio prompts to not happen when audio prompts are turned off? Especially when turning audio prompts off used to do exactly that…

They are genuinely able to claim that turning audio prompts off not actually turning audio prompts off is “by design”… were they able keep a straight face when they said this?

Honestly, for a business currently trying to ask people to pay for underwhelming features, it’s cringe-worthy to attempt to claim the basic ones not working is “by design”.

    It is honestly laughable.
