Whatsapp notification strange pattern. Is that normal?

Hello,

One thing I noticed today  with my F7Pro Sapphire is that when someone is texting me on Whatsapp and is sending a few messages one by one I will receive notification for the 1st one, then won't receive the 2nd one, then when he sends the 3rd one I will receive 2nd and 3rd together, then won't get 4th but will receive 4th and 5th when he sends the 5th one. I hope it makes sense.

I'm using Samsung s24 ultra if that makes any difference

My wife has a F7Pro and She experiences exactly the same thing ( with a Samsung phone as well)

Is this normal behaviour or should I try to do something to get it fixed?

Thanks

  • I haven't seen this behaviour on my Pixel 6 Pro, but I do know that Google and potentially Samsung were talking about implementing a notification "cool down" feature which would group together notifications from the same application in the scenario where apps we're notifying you too. I.e when somebody is machine-gun messaging you on WhatsApp.

The idea was that it would send through the first one or two, but then back off on notifying you for all subsequent messages if they were coming through too rapidly. It would batch them up and maybe send them through every 10 seconds or so.

I can't be sure this is what you're seeing, but it warrants a further investigation.

  • Thank you for your reply. Yes it is something similar, but this new feature should be included with the new version of android which I don't have yet. Also, if I receive the first whatsapp message and don't read it , even if I wait a few minutes, the second one received from the same person is not notified, while the third one is. Basically it alternately notifies (one yes and one no) the messages received from the same user.
The strange thing is that both my wife and I experience the same behaviour, so I thought it was a 'feature'.

  • Moreover, all notifications are  showed on the phone and not muted

  • I would say that is normal. I have never investigated in detail, but I always had the impression that it is time related, something like only one notification every 60 seconds. I also think that all messages are visible on the watch in the notifications widget, it's just that the watch is not notifying about every single one.

I think it's a feature on Garmin side to not be too annoying with notifications. I am glad it is there actually, because there are some annoying people out there who write their messages in fragments every 5 seconds instead of finish writing and sending the full text in the end, like a sane person would. My watch would buzz for 2 minutes straight and I am glad it doesn't.

  • Thanks for your replay. I agree with you. But there are some cases where this has caused me to miss important questions/things. For example there are people with the first.message say hello (for example) and then ask you something. Here in these cases I always miss the notification of the second message and that is the most important one. In addition, I have tested this, and it is not time-dependent. If I receive a first message from a person and do not read it, even after waiting 10 minutes, i do not receive notification of the second message from the same person, but ok for the third messagge and so on. If, on the other hand, I read the first notification in that time, then the second one is notified correctly.

  • Okay, in this case it makes a lot less sense that this is intentional. Maybe  can shed some light on this and tell us if this is a bug or feature?

  • Today I had two more comparisons, a colleague of mine with an Epix 2 Sapphire and an Iphone does not experience this strange behaviour. In his case in fact the whatsapp notifications all arrive. Another colleague of mine with Fenix 7 Pro and Samsung s24 ultra, on the other hand, experiences exactly the same pattern with whatsapp notifications. Does it perhaps depend on the Garmin-Samsung combo?
Finally, this strange pattern only affects whatsapp. I have in fact tested other apps without finding any anomalies

  • Maybe it is the battery management from Samsung. Maybe try to turn it off, at least for the connect app?

I also monitored it more closely over the weekend, I also did not see the pattern you described. My combo is Fenix 7 SS + Pixel 6a.

  • Thank you for your reply. I have already removed all battery optimisation, but nothing has changed. Whatsapp notifications still have that behaviour ( this does not apply to other apps). Also, I come from a F7 SS and I didn't have this problem either, it appeared with the switch to the F7 PRO SS.

  • Hello,

This is normal. Customer's who use WhatsApp as their messaging app may notice that they only get alerted with every other notification coming through. This was determined to be an issue with the way notifications are being sent through the Phone by WhatsApp and we will not be able to resolve this.
