Pause only GPS tracking during and activity, but not timer o anything else

During a race, it may happen that you have to temporarily move away from the route (for example due to physiological needs during a marathon..).
If you do nothing on the watch, a bad deviation will be recorded on the track and extra "fake" meters will be measured.
To avoid this, you can pause the activity... but the timer will also be paused. But we are running a race, the concept of "pause" makes no sense!

What I would like to do is to be able to stop only the GPS detection and nothing else. Like when you enter a tunnel or underpass, the GPS stops receiving, but everything else continues.

This way I could press the GPS pause button, exit the route, walk 200 meters (which I DON'T want to measure) and lose 5 minutes (which I want to measure), return to the route and press a button to resume maybe 10 meters ahead of where I stopped. What I will then see recorded on the track will be a small straight line of 10 meters which took me 5 minutes to travel.

Is it possible to achieve this?

  • Tryusing the rest feature on the Ultra activity?

  • AFAIK, Rest mode in Ultra run activity does not stop GPS.

I haven't tested it, but I'd assume, that it would be possible to set GPS to "off" temporarily in the settings while an activity is running.

  • It keeps GPS active, but I'm not sure if it stores the points..... I'll have to dig back through some activities?

  • This is what I often wanted to use. Since I want to be able to track pauses and stuff like you mentioned, because it’s part of the activity, but I don’t need extra kilometers while sitting still on a bank and waiting for whatever.

So far, I have to pause the activity and use start and endtime to  calculate the overall time.

  • The rest feature keeps recording the track and measuring the distance. I used it many times during ultra races. It does create a rest lap so you can later see how much time you spent at the rest stop. Also it shows the rest timer to help you be aware of the time at the rest stop.

Also, turning GPS off isn't exactly a solution because then the watch would use accelerometer to estimate the distance - the same it does when running in a tunnel.

  • Hi there,

Garmin devices typically do not have a built-in feature specifically for pausing only the GPS tracking while continuing to record time. The usual "Pause" function on these devices pauses both the GPS and the timer.

I hope this doesn't come across as impolite, but I'm curious—why would you want to pause the GPS during a race? Even if you temporarily move off the route, those extra meters are still part of your overall race experience. Including them in your activity data reflects the true nature of your race, including any detours.

Just a thought, but this might also help in understanding your performance better under real race conditions.

Maybe creating a new lap for the detours would be a solution?

  • So far, I have to pause the activity and use start and endtime to  calculate the overall time.

Just out of curiosity, do you mean that you manually calculate the overall time by subtracting start time from end time? Because both Garmin and Strava automatically calculate that and display it as “elapsed time”. Strava goes further and calculates an “elapsed pace”  based on your elapsed time.

  • Because both Garmin and Strava automatically calculate that and display it as “elapsed time”.

Yeah, you’re completely in the right. I thought when exporting to Komoot that it would show the wrong time, but it shows the „elapsed time“ there, so it’s completely fine. Only in the overview in Garmin it shows the „total time“ and this is without the stopping, which I have to keep in mind but in the stats it shows „elapsed time“.

I think I was confused, because if you track it with Komoot and pause there, it would in the end only show the „active time“ and nowhere the „elapsed time“, so I had to use start and end time for getting the „elapsed time“, just to make you understand where my misconception came from.

So…  thanks for the clarification. All fine. Muscle
