Question regarding 17.23 and dynamic heart rate source switching?

It seems to imply that you need to be using a Garmin heart rate monitor strap for it to work.

There are instructions on how to disable it.

I've heard one verity sense user saw it kick in so I'd disable it to be sure

I saw on Reddit that DC Rainmaker commented, while it was in beta, that it's very interesting and cleverer than they are letting on. He said he'd do a dive into the nuance at some stage.

Except when it’s not for whatever reason (a quick scan through the forums will show posts where there have been issues with strap HR) in which case you’d want this enabled. Think of it like insurance; you never need it until you do. 

"Switching sources based on the quality of the heart rate signal during an activity requires the use of a Garmin HRM-Fit, HRM-Pro, or HRM-Pro Plus" (they mention startup noise specifically). 

Sounds great, but many folks use older or more affordable HRM straps, so I tested if it is a useful feature for other HRM's as well. 

After detaching one of the connection points of a HRM-Run module, the display showed heart rate '--' and random values for 15 minutes (that was how long I tested).

Re-attaching the HRM-Run resulted in a "HRM-Run connected" notification immediately, and corect readings. 

After detaching the HRM module completely and putting it away in a metal container to simulate it being switched off suddenly, it took 30 seconds for the wrist HRM to take over.

So failover when the chest HRM is sending intermittent or faulty data does not happen, unless the chest HRM switches itself off, which some brands may do, but that can take 10 minutes or more. Startup noise detection will not work. But failover when signal is lost is quick. All in all, I think this feature is useful with older and non-Garmin HRM's too.

Yah, one of the main reasons is forgetting to wet the contacts on the strap to ensure a good connection. It results in wildly high readings until you've got a sweat on. It's a nice features that saved a couple of my cold weather runs from being obliterated when I've forgotten to prep the strap.

30s delay when the signal is lost seems long. Do you know how long it would take for whr to take over without dynamic source switching enabled?
