Help with settings for ultra runs please

Hey guys,

New to the Garmin watch world. (Fenix 7x pro sapphire)

i just finished a 24 hour ultra run and here are the things my watch ‘failed’ me.

I used the trail run setting

Apparantly at midnight it went into sleep mode. In doing so it stopped my progress, tracking ect at 8am with a ‘goodmorning’ report. So i dont have one full dataset on my run. I had to start a ‘new’ run.

how to slove this?

battery dead after 24 hours. How to prolong?

i had the idea that the backlight on my watch was constantly on. Is it due to wrist movement? How to change that? Must drain battery.

the screen was sensitive to any touch. It just showed me random maps (never asked for it) wanted to change data (i didnt). What happened and how to stop it?

all i want is to run 24-48 hour events and for my watch just to show me my pace, the distance, elevation and time. Preferably in one screen. And if i have to tap the screen to see it, fine. This flicking on with every wrist movement or touch of a shirt or whatever made it go on, cant be battery handy.

i would like it to track me, but all in the background. Dont need the maps on my watch face. Just the one screen with time, pace, distance, elevation.

please help with what settings i need to have or change in order to get a full multi day event recorded as one run.

thanks a million

  • What I use with my Enduro 2

    1) set map to North up not track up

    2) use GPS only, it's good enough for ultras

    3) use power profiles to set backlight to off. Then I can only switch it on with the light key

    4) in the activity settings switch the touch screen to off

I've never had it go into sleep during an activity, had you paused it to resume later or something?

On the day of the ultra alter your sleep schedule perhaps?

I've got 1%0 per hour with power profiles, which you'll have to be careful with as they're bugged right now

  • Did you get an opportunity to resume later? It may have paused the activity?

  • Oh you can also switch off the morning report

This is exactly what I use during my ultras. I've also never had sleep activate due to the movement / heart rate during races, but that's absolutely *** that yours has done it.

I have a base model Fenix 7 and I use around 2-3% during races. It easily makes 24 hours.

An important note is to not leave the map screen running when not actively navigating. It's by far and away the biggest drain.

  • I think the main reason battery drains so fast is that you have wrist gesture backlight enabled. In my experience that simply doesn't work when running and the backlight stays on most of the time and that increases the battery usage very significantly - more than twice vs the estimated battery life.

For an ultra race I recommend turning backlight off completely - you'll have headlamp at night so there is no need for backlight.

Also, you should turn touch off to avoid undesired behavior with switching data screens or editing data fields, etc.

Other recommended settings to turn Bluetooth connection with the phone off and switch GPS to All Satellites or GPS only.

In my last 100 miler I used these settings with the satellite mode set to All Satellites. After almost 32 hours my Fenix 7X  still had close to 30% of the battery remaining. I used course navigation the entire time too.

  • Same settings as epsilon tells you.
    Touch screen off,
    GPS only
    Wrist gesture off, always.
The light off, in ultras at night you go with a flashlight, it is not necessary.
I carry the track loaded if it is a race, but I only use that screen occasionally,
In my last ultra, 24h I ended up with 56% battery.
Use the vest mode, tweaking a few things as I have described.
My watch is a 7X Pro

  • I did not, upon receiving the morning report, my  run was cut-off. Had to start a new one.

i figured a few things out. Not sure how to turn off the morning report

  • Awesone! Sure will give it a go. Sounds like just the settings i would like :)

    there’s a vest mode?
