Garmin Daily Suggested Workouts training for an 50km ultrarun

Hi there,

Is there anyone who has tried the Garmin daily suggested workouts to train for an 50km (or longer) ultra running event?
I do have an 80km trailrun event in jan 2025 and wondering if the Garmin DSW workouts would be able to train me to that goal.

  • I've used them in the leadup to a 50km ultra and found them to be ok, but not great. A dedicated training plan created by a specialist, specifically for a given race had me running "missions" every 4 weeks that gradually increased from 2 hours to 6 hours - something Garmin's algo would never recommend, but it's also something that far better prepared me for the actual race.

    From my experience, the recommended workouts are great for 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon road courses, but they're not the most ideal for ultras given that the terrain varies wildly between courses. Some ultras will have you mostly training for stairs whilst some are pretty much dead flat. Both require different training plans.

    I will use the app Runmotion instead which do seem to be more catered for Ultra events.
